Protective Film and Delivery
Hello,
Does anyone know if the protective film can be ordered and applied to vehicles prior to European or US BMW Performance Center pick up? Is this a dealer only installation add-on? |

It's an after-market product. You need to find an installer after delivery.

I got paint protection film installed just a couple weeks ago. It was done by a detailing shop. I actually called my local BMW dealership and they admitted to doing very few paint protection film installs. Choose your installer carefully. However, if you do Performance delivery in Greenville, SC, the shop I used is in Mount Pleasant, SC near Charleston! The shop is called Pleasant Details. I highly recommend them. I'm not sure where you are coming from or eventually taking the car but if it is on your way, take a side trip to Charleston and get your baby protected!

They have a good website, you can see they do a lot of high end cars. They also give a discount for BMWCAA if you are a member. If you decide to do it, tell them Lynda in the white Z4 from Columbia, SC recommended them. You can even see my car on their Facebook page when they worked on it.

Isn't this like covering your couch with plastic?
Sure, it protects the paint, but then you have to look at the film.

Installed well, it is barely perceptible. I can noticed a line on the hood up close and at certain angles. The bumper area I can not tell at all. Unfortunately the Z4 is one car that you can not do a full hood (and avoid the line). The car is just too big in the front end.

"Barely perceptible" isn't the same as "imperceptible". Besides having visible edges, the plastic film is every bit as susceptible to being scratched or visibly damaged as is the paint.

In my opinion the barely perceptible nature of the film is much better than a front end full of rock chips. Ultimately it is a choice, I am happy with my choice and recommend it others. Truthfully, I thought the line across the hood would bother me more but it is really is not that noticable (and I am anal anout my car). BTW 3M makes a spray product that removes light scratches from the film (swirl type marks) and adds shine.

I have the 3M film on my car and would not go any other way. My Z3 and my first Z4 did not have the film and I had more rock chips than you can imagine. I put it on my 2nd Z4 and when I sold it, it looked as good as new. I have it on my 2010 Z4 and also can only see it from a certain angle. The beauty of it is that if it really started to look shabby, it can easily be removed and you have a paint job that is still in pristine condition.
