Rusty Nuts!!
Has anyone else had a problem with their wheel nuts going rusty? I've just come back from my dealer who has changed my nuts as 'a gesture of goodwill' however they won't change the locking nuts!! Also, of the ones they have replaced half of them are second hand!! They are saying it's my own fault for using wheel cleaner, and i should only use soapy water....i've got the multispokes and i'd like to see them clean those with 'soapy water'!!
This has really pissed me off.....shocking customer service from BMW!! Zed 4 BMW Customer Service |

So, it's not the wheel cleaner. Did they ask you if you use wheel cleaner or did they just assume it, since it is convenient for them to place blame on it? If you've used wheel cleaner then show them my response above. Also, you may want to review the owners manual first, and if there is NO warning about using wheel cleaner, then ask them to point to you the exact page in the owners manual that says not to use wheel cleaner!!!!!!!!!! That oughta' be fun for them, because they will look and look and not find it. Then your next question is: " ...and soooo, why would it be MY fault?" So aside from worrying about my HPFP now I have to go home and check my nuts....
I sprayed them with some nasty stuff to clean them once but most times it's just soapy water. Besides, in Canada our nuts don't rust, they just freeze and fall off.....oh, you mean "Wheel" nuts, oops !

Remove them and apply a light coat of marine wheel bearing grease to the threads. Be very careful when re-torquing as you will use a lower torque rating since the threads are lube. The marine grade grease is water proof so it should end you problem. Not an uncommon problem. I have encountered it on most every vehicle I have owned both foreign and domestic.

Re:
To be fair most wheel cleaners are way too strong and will wreck your wheels, nuts and hubs.
I use cartec wheel cleaner. It has no acid and I use it watered down 1:5. More than enough as I seal my wheels though most people use it 1:3. You can get 5 liters for £25 delivered free in the UK on ebay. The cartec active shampoo isn't bad either. I wash the car a lot and these products are good value and work well. Had the car since July 2009 and the wheels and hubs still look as new. Then again my car was never driven in the winter. i'm sure road salt would have not been kind to your nuts. |

That argument (by the service dept) would not cut the mustard over here. They sell wheel cleaner and recommend that we use it.

Marine lube your nuts to make them waterproof - I love that reply, think I'll try to use that line more often.
You could also try some spray lacquer to give them a healthy and complete shine. Out here in the middle east the nuts stay very dry so little risk of corrosion, but all the sand could be quite abrasive and cause a lot of chaffing and friction. I will check my ones more often but think they are keeping a good finish to them. Not sure if the GCC spec cars have different nuts but I dont have a locking nut, but if someone does try to get a hold of my nuts then the punishment for crimes out here will be a chopped off hand - but as part of the GCC specifications we do get heated front and rear windows, most useful in +50 degrees celcius heats. |

From time to time a dealer will try to get the customer to give them the answer THEY want to hear so they can blame it on the customer.
A question like: "You use wheel cleaner to clean the wheels don't you? This question is designed for the customer to say yes so as to self-incriminate the customer, in the minds of the dealer. If this ever happens to me, and the dealer asks me a similiar type question, my default answer is, "I FOLLOWED WHATEVER THE OWNER'S MANUAL SAID TO DO/NOT TO DO" That's an air tight answer that does not lead to them being able to say it's my fault. |

With a thread title of "Rusty Nuts" one has to be prepared for some "different" answers.....
.....the double entendre rules on this one I think..

Off topic but for early fall, it was 95 today in Charlotte (35C).
I've had the top down on the Z4 several times this week but its almost too hot.
