good point, BUT why do modern air intake systems induct air from the front exterior of the car instead of just sucking in "fresh air" from the engine bay?

Colder air is higher density, so more O2 for a given volume. |

Vintage-
I have enjoyed the posts on your upcoming mods. Look forward to seeing the results! As a noob whom is planning to purchase soon, I would like to ask a couple of questions that might provide answers for some of us that are just learning about the various Z4 models. Since you have a '10 35i, and the 35is was not available then, would you get the 35is if you were buying today? What is the difference between the 2 cars, besides, but relative to, the hp? Example: If I got a 35i, what would I sacrifice if I loaded it up with the M package, premium, Nav, etc. (other than a $5K savings), over the 35is? If I got the 35i and did the same mods as you have done, would I be sitting with a better, faster car over the 35is? Your knowledge of these cars is pretty spectacular and I would appreciate your thoughts rather than be sorry later that I took the wrong path. Thanks in advance Bill |

As for performance, our 35i will smoke a stock 35is. Keep in mind that it is truly pushing around 400hp and 400lb/ft. of torque with the ESS Stage II, FMIC, Eisenmann exhaust, charge pipe, etc. I drive around in sport shift mode or manual plus Sport setting all of the time - it screams and the power is ridiculous. That being said, our mods cost around $5k+; for that price you could buy the 35is and skip the mods if you wanted. In addition, with the 35is and no mods there will be no warranty issues at the dealer if there is a problem. I really think there are two paths: 1) buy the 30i stripped down with manual = light, very quick, and really fun to shift without all the expensive stuff or 2) a loaded DCT 35i or 35is. Then, mod away if you want. |

Thanks, Vintage. I guess that my quandary is: what do I get on the stock 35is that is different than what I could get on the 35i? Bigger engine, different exhaust, but is the suspension or the handling any different? Better, or just different?
Thanks

The exhaust is louder, the dct and steering programming are more aggressive.
PLus theyy give you a thicker tiller, but you lose the nice stainless trim on it and get a plastic ///M badge as compensation...

You've described the steering wheel on my 35i, right down to the plastic ///M badge. I was surprised when it arrived with this wheel fitted, as I wasn't expacting it, but I certainly didn't complain. I prefer the thicker rim and lack of brushed metal on the M wheel over the standard tiller.

The 35is basically comes with the M Sport package which includes more aggressive front and rear bumpers and the M Adaptive suspension as the most integral components. Interior-wise there are the aesthetic enhancements - M steering wheel, trim, foot rest & side sill trim etc.
Then as Dr Stig mentioned the DCT and steering programming are different. Plus a sportier exhaust. Also you get a fatter front anti-roll bar. I recently watched a you tube vid of a 35is being driven around Imola race track shot from the interior. Body-roll looked minimal - a lot less than my 135i for sure. And of course the extra power. As I have mentioned previously a tune will become available for the 35is eventually. A JB3 v2.0 will work for example, just needs some custom settings. |
