Nice writeup.

Which pedals are those in your car?

They are the BMW set for the Z4, Pedals for the Auto are 35 00 0 304 643, and the footrest is 51 47 0 027 792

if I don't have a Glass of Wine with dinner tomorrow, I will pinout the cables so see if I can short 2 of them together to test the fog light activation, if someone confirms that the US models have the same wiring harness.

ChuckB, an old Soldier thanks you very much. I am reasonably certain that the Euro switch will work in a US car. Also glad to know the trim piece is not difficult to remove from the dash. In the E9X cars it is very easy to activate the rear fogs by simply taking the switch apart and breaking off a couple tabs from the inside of the black button for the rear fogs. This allows the button to be pushed in against the circuit board to turn on the rear fog lights. If there is someone out there who is brave enough to take their US switch apart we may be able to use our rear fogs without buying the new switch. Scheidmann will ship to the US for $20. You are correct that the switch costs about $95 depending on the exchange rate on the day you place your order. If no one is willing to take their switch apart, I am not brave enough to do it, then I will place my order in a week or so. It is curious that the E89 Z4 is one of the few BMWs that does not come with front fog lights even in Europe. Do you have any idea what the bottom button on the switch is used for or is it simply a blank for looks to make the switch more symmetrical? Thanks again for the great write up and pictures. This is very helpful. I can't imagine that the car needs to be coded after installing the Euro switch. In the E9X cars it is a simple plug and play. I have done it 3 times now with no issues on 3 different cars.

I have contacted Scheidmann to see if they will offer a reduced cost on a group order for the Euro switch. Let me know if you are interested. I am willing to have them all shipped to me and then I can mail them out to each one. This should reduce the overall cost of each switch. I'll let you know what I hear and if it worth doing it this way. They may not be able to reduce the actual cost of the switch so the difference in shipping alone may not be worth the effort.

Update: They can't give me a price until they know how many switches I will order. I will wait a week or so and see if anyone else is interested. If not, I'll order one for myself and see if it works.

For the EU switch its $95 US dollars at www. schmiedmann.com (from from BMWCCA Roundel) don't know if they deliver to US. Sounds like a prettry good price for a BMW electrical part. Anyway it appears that either switch layout is compatible, as i would expect it to be - now for the wiring? It appears they use the outer brake light for the fog light. Is the US harness compatible? Seems as if you had some prior experience. Is it a simple plug and play?

Yes, installation of the Euro switch on the E9X cars is a simple plug and play. Nothing else needed. You can also modify the US switch to use the rear fogs by breaking off a couple tabs from the rear of the rear fog light switch so that it can be depressed against the circuit board to turn on the lights. Not sure if this is possible with the Z4 but it might be if someone is brave enough to take their switch apart. There is a nice DIY for this mod on E90post in the DIY forum, both the installation of the Euro switch and the mod of the US switch. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26545&highlight=Euro+light+switch

The Bi-Xenons used are somewhat polarized, so they cut through everything the fog lights would used for, i have noticed that I do not see snow falling in the headlights until it gets pretty heavy, but can see it behind me in others headlights. No idea as to the shape of the light switch panel as it is not used on any other model, so must for looks.

As would I. HOWEVER, is it me or is there no metal/alumin. trim on the Euro button, compared to our US spec button? I could have swore there was a trim around the 'handle'.

Edit, saw pictures on the previous page. I am 'a go' if it looks like that!

No trim around my switch other than what is on the dash itself. In my case it is burl walnut. So far we have 3 interested in a switch. Can someone remove their switch to check to see if the wiring matches with the Euro switch that ChuckB posted?

Not sure how to remove it. I have the brushed aluminum trim and it looks to be two pieces compared to the one piece on the picture...

That is true, the light switch panel is 2 pieces, but they held together with "welded" plastic pins. If you look at Stafainn's picture on page 1, the outer plastic piece is covered by leather, but the construction is the same. Pull from the top left side first, once the clip releases grab it top and bottom along the center line and pull at the top and bottom in an alternating fashion to wiggle out the 2 right side clips. It does take a bit of force, but never more than 2 fingers worth.

Let us know if the wiring is the same.

Did try to figure out the pins, but no combination I tried on the switch showed any activity when i pushed the Fog Light Button [Contact Switch, doesn't latch or click], so I am not sure how this works, maybe "FM".

Thanks. I'll do the same. I am thinking that the US switch can be modified to activate the rear fogs similar to the mod used for the late model LCI E9X cars. This will require someone with enough guts to take their switch apart. Not sure I have what it takes to do this.

I wondered about the lack of front fog lights when I bought the car... dealer told me it's so close to the ground headlights do the job.

Looks like its possible but parts are missing; the rubber mat that makes the connection on the green board, and to connector between the button and the rubber mat.

This was all that was in there;
