3.0 v's 3.5is

Hi
Is there any difference with the engin eor turbo on the 3.0 and 3.5

I see one has 258bhp and the other 306 or 340bhp.

Is this just remap difference or are the turbos different and any other mechanical parts

The 3.0 is naturally aspirated; the "3.5" is actually a 3.0 twin turbo with (340) and without (306) overboost.

Sorry but that's not entirely correct.
The 3.0l is an N52 NA engine 265hp
The 3.5 is a 3.0l N54 twin turbo engine ~300hp
The 3.5 is a 3.0l N55 single turbo engine ~306hp and not available on the E89
The 3.5is is a 3.0l N54OTO twin turbo engine ~345hp and is used on the 1M and Z4 35is, same as the N54 but lighter, stronger internals and lighter flywheel.

You can map a 35 to a 35is power, but you can map the 35is to 400+.

With people modding 35i and 35is Z4's I'm unaware of any differences in the end result - seems to me that they both land at the final HP numbers, regardless of where they started. Would like to hear otherwise if that is not the case.

+1.

Originally the big difference between 35 and 35is was the "is" came with the overboost function which brought tq upto 369 for 7 seconds. I also think the "is" has an additional oil cooler that earlier 35i didn't have, but this was added to the 35i in recent years.

Both motors should have the same internals.

2011 Z4 35is  [0.00]
This distinction between the N54 is a really interesting discussion.

I have always told myself I have the same engine in my 2008 535 and my 2011 Z4. Never really paid any attention to the letters that come after N54xxx.

Hi, I have a 30i and my motor is a N52k. I still haven't figured out what the "K" stands for. I know it's probably a small difference in the motor yet am still curious to find out what that is. Anyone else know? I intentionally got a 30i because it seems to be the last naturally aspirated motor and model BMW will ever make. Anyone's thoughts on if this might become a rare collectors item as well due to that?
