2011 Z4 3.5is damaged in transit
After waiting for what seems like an eternity, my new Z4 3.5is arrived last night. Sadly, the front bumper was damaged during shipment. The dilemma I'm facing now is whether or not to take delivery or to walk away from the deal. It's difficult to consider walking away, particulary since this is one of the very last of the 2011 3.5is's. The dealership would like to repair it and proceed with the deal as though nothing has happened. From my perspective, the car is damaged and will require a new front bumper and paint work. This is not insignificant, probably about $2500 worth of work. I feel compelled to renegotiate the deal, now that the value of vehicle has diminished. I would like to get advice/comments from you guys, especially those of you who are attorneys or anyone who might have experience with situations like this. Thanks in advance.

It's only cosmetic damage I would just take the current deal and have them repair it. Now if there was mechanical damage or structural pieces needed to be replaced then I would say renegotiate.

A new bumper, painted to match and properly installed is the way to go. My front bumper was also damaged, though not as bad as yours. My dealer ordered a new bumper, painted it perfectly and installed it. No problem.

Re:
At least they told you.............
However I would have a good check behind that bumper. Those bumpers can deform a fair bit on impact and there is an oil cooler in behind there. Looks as if it took a bump coming of the transporter, so should be ok. I would personally be expecting some compensation for this though as it's not now a new car is it? |

I'd have them paint and install a new front bumper. If this sort of damage happened at the port, that's what would have been done and you'd likely never have been told (I am sure more than a few BMWs are delivered that way). Be sure you get a chance to inspect the work and you're 100% happy before you sign any paperwork to buy the car.
Beware though, they must send it to a very good body shop. It is easy to equal or exceed the finish quality of the factory paint, but it is difficult to equal the robustness of factory paint, especially on the flexible pieces like the front bumper cover. Years down the road, you can almost always see the difference between factory paint and repair jobs. I can almost always spot a color mismatch too. Give them a chance to make it right, examine the repair carefully, and then make a decision. |

BTW, if someone made a body kit, lip, or splitter for the M front bumper, there's a good chance it would cover up the damage. Then you'd get to keep the factory paint and have a cool looking front end. I'm probably dreaming though.... that would be way too easy.

It wouldn't worry me - I damaged mine almost as bad as the one shown, and I had it repaired - $400 and looks like new.
The magic that is plastic welding. Mind you - if it was someone else that damaged it - I would want a new bumper.

if you are expecting some compensation for the whole deal, you waiting longer after the arrival of the car, bla bla... , you may ask for a free complete service check up ? i dont know but you have nothing to do with an attorney for a minor problem like this, the car looks great, just get it as soon as it is ready..

Bummer, at first read I was thinking no big deal, but that's a lot of cosmetic damage. At a min I would require a new bumper and re-paint and an additional discount. I have had two similar issues and the repaint has aged differently than rest of the car.
Good luck. Remember its nearly a 70k purchase so get it right, or don't do it. |

Just have them fix it. My car's bumper was pretty scraped up when I went to finalize the deal. I pointed it out and they had the bumper fixed before I took delivery. I suppose it couldnt hurt to get a few dollars off of the deal but I dont think its a major dealbreaker.

Have them fix it...Especially if you are leasing it!
Just a side note: We have to mark it as a Damaged vehicle when it gets to the dealership and there are problems like these. BMW knows about it and have insurances that pay for the damage. Try to get a few $$ of the payment (it can't hurt)... Afterall someone F'd up your beautiful new car ;( Don't worry about it not looking good either....They will do it perfect! |

You don't own the car until you sign the papers. No contract no reason to have an attorney involved. It's still the dealers car. Walk away is an option, but seems foolish. They will fix the bumper cosmetic damage.

I agree that it is a frustrating situation, but why walk away? New bumper painted by BMW and paid for by BMW and you are good to go.

I had my bumper replaced after cosmetic damage in a parking lot tangle. The "other" insurance covered it - but it was ~$2K for a new bumper, paint, labor. There is no way to tell it ever happened visually.

Mike,
Don't walk away, as you stated it is one of the last 2011's BMW will repair it, all you need to do is insist that the bumper will be replaced not repaired. Insist you want to see the damaged bumper after they replaced the bumper. Be firm about that. It will take some time since they will have to order a replacement bumper from Germany (unless there is one in stores someplace in North America). Once repaired it will be the car you ordered in the first place. Nice car btw, Happy Motoring always
