Loaded Z4is -- no compass mirror. Is that normal??

Just looked- there is no specific mention of the compass mirror in either the configurator or the list of standard features for any of the variants (30i, 35i, 35is)

The issue not limited just to a missing compass, it is that I have the entirely wrong mirror. Mine has a large red clown nose. The one on the BMW "build your own" has the sleaker, grey nose. That is more important to me than the compass, really.

Warden, just thinking about this; I also have the big red clown nose (great description btw) and now wonder if you order the factory alarm (which I did), that this means you don't get the Compass mirror because it's an entirely different piece of hardware?

Just a thought.

I also have the big red nose under the mirror (alarm blinker). With the red nose I guess I am all set. I also have the compass on my Z4 35i 2009.

The star denotes that the car comes equipped with the compass mirror if Nav is not installed. Presumably the theory is that why would you need a compass in the mirror if you have Nav installed, which shows the compass / direction etc.

Not saying I don't disagree, just wanted to point out that it's there, but incredibly subtle.

That seams to be correct, I don't have the Navigation or iDrive and I do have the Compass.

The red nose is actually clear on mine. You hardly notice it's there unless the alarm is on.

We test-drove an X3 that had the mirror with the small grey button instead of the big red clown nose. Both my wife and I noticed the difference right away. It looks much better. In a small interior such as the Z4 the red button is even more prominent and intrusive.

I don't give a flip about a compass. I have a nav system. Besides, if I'm familiar enough with an area to care about cardinal directions I almost always know which way is north anyway.

The big red clown nose is bugging me more by the day. I have a feeling that if I contacted BMW NA about this, they would tell me to talk to my dealer and that my dealer would tell me to talk to BMW NA.

Mine is a MY2011, build date April 27 2010, with Nav/iDrive, alarm. NO premium package - no compass. I have to manually twist my smoke grey cover on the small mirror to dim the night lights.
