Winter tires question

Dear All,

My intention is to order a 23i (Europe) in August.

I try alredy to see wich wheels size, and my question is: is a set of winter tires absolutely necessary?

I do not want to order 18 or 19' wheels and put 16' winter tires for 6 months...

I live in Brussels, that means: rain in winter, 2 or 3 weeks under 0°c and that'all...

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

in my opinion, winter tires are better then summer tires below approx. 7°C.
But I would not buy winter tires for only a few weeks.

Garage List
My last rearwheel drive car was a Honda S2000, living near Antwerp, probably the same weather.
Never had wintertires on that car, but had 4 years an avg of 3 days mandatory winter/snowstop. Car was simply said not safe enough to drive with snow.
And because the Z4 (35i) is a low rev engine with lots of torq which is the opposite of the high rev/low torq S2000.

You probably will need the wintertires if you won't like the mandatory stop of have another car.

(No, my Z4 will not get the wintertires).

If you're going to be driving in literally ANY snow, I would say "yes", snowtires are mandatory.

Pick up a whole set of 16" snowtires & steel rims for cheap. It's easier to swap whole wheels than it is to spoon on tires. Not to mention the width of the OEM tires is likely to greatly exceed that of any snow tire.

I'm in WI for at least 1 more winter until we can move further South (out of the snow zone), and have resigned to simply not driving the Z when there is snow on the road. I have 2 other cars which will work fine while the Z stays clean & warm in the garage.

Thanks for all your replies.

So, I guess I can keep the summer tires during the winter (rain only) and just keep it in the garage when we have snow ( a couple of days a year).
Rain was my main 'problem' but good news for my money :-)

That's what I would do if I were you... It rains in summer too, so the tires should be fine. Obviously you're gonna want to take it easy, but you should do fine so long as there's no snow on the roads.
