I would much rather them transfer the 330i's engine + manifolds to the lower end models than a IL4T.

These people drive their cars daily and probably never go above 3K rpm. So why not put in an engine that develops torque lower in the RPM range and then you save on fuel.

I would also wager that the N20 weighs less than the N52 (IDK by how much or if at all, just speculation), so the dynamics of the car would be improved as well. I would also wager that the N20 revs faster than the N52 (again just speculation) so it would probably feel more sporty. I doubt that the N20 will be as smooth of an engine, but again I will point out that most of the people that buy cars with this engine probably won't rev it so high so this won't be a problem.

Additionally, the reason why they are going FI over NA is so that they will not have to pay those crazy fines in EU. Everybody knows this so we should stop complaining about it and accept it already.
Sorry to disagree with you, but some of us lowly N/A 6-bangers actually redline their engines as much as you turbo-guys and don't have HPFP issues.

+1

Despite my intentions to buy a turbo BMW (1M), NA engines are superior in many ways to an enthusiast.

BMW is not porsche, and this car is not intending to be a super performer, so you won't get the colt following like the 944, nor should you.

Instead you have many 4-cyl Z4s sitting on dealer lots.

In the 90s BMW sold 4 cyllinders in the US. by the e46 they were gone, and American BMW drivers celebrated. Now they are back, and those same people are still BMW fans, and despise the 4-cylinder even more.

The drive reviews of the N20 from the X1 so far have been really good, people seem to say it is actually in many ways better then the 6 it replaces... Im now really curious to drive it.

This could sell, assuming BMW brings the price of the Z4 down some, its already a bit to expensive, and now with a 4 cylinder, regardless of how much power it makes, it needs to be priced lower. People simply are not going to pay that kind of money for a 4 cylinder, its an image thing.

The reason the 4-cylinders disappeared then was because they were underpowered for the weight of the car compared to the 4-cylinder engines of the E30 days. How do you figure that all these people despise 4-cylinder engines even more? Sure, there is something to be said for the silky smoothness and decent torque of an NA I6, but modern 4-cylinders have come a long way. As someone already said, if these new engines offer equal or improved drivability, then most people probably won't care that the NA I6 has been replaced. It will be us enthusiasts/purists that miss it the most.

I really really want to see the engine bay with N20. Do they stuff it with more air?

A lot of worries about this engine

In VW group, Golf VI GTI has a real succes! In Audi's lineup, this engine is no.1 on petrol engines sales! And the examples can continue...

We all shoud understand that this engine has a better efficiency than the 6 cyl NA one!
I'm sure the performances are better too

Americans seem to have a very negative attitude to a lot of things.. diesels, hatchbacks, tourers/estates, 4 cylinder engines.... I have to confess I just don't get it!

On topic... at least the motor will be smaller and lighter?

Well I drove the X1 the other day (they're already here in Canada). As for the looks...it's OK, will have to get used to it. It's comfortable inside and small like a 1 series. Rides well. Nice and quiet. But that's the tough part. The motor was strong enough but it's quiet.....very quiet. The 6 cyl growl is completely gone. BMW should have done some exhaust tuning.

But you guys talking about the mileage are absolutely right. Up here "in the north", we're at almost $1.50/litre which, if you do the math, equates to much more than what you down south are paying per gallon. Nevertheless, both of us are screwed and we're approaching what I paid in Europe last year. So when it comes down to it, when my sport ute replacement comes due next year, I'll probably consider either the X1 if it's the only "ute" with the new 4 cyl. If they drop it into the X3 (which I love, turbo version is fantastic), even better.

The price of gas ain't going down anytime soon and with the M3 in the family, its time to start re-thinking things.

Hey...on a happy note, I drove the Mini Countryman S (AWD version) almost back to back with the X1. Night and day. Sadly, with that silly, rackety console/accessory type thing in the middle of it, it sounds and feels a little cheap. Having previously had 2 Mini's in the family this was really disappointing. As both of these vehicles (the X1 and the Countryman) share some componentry, the X1 is by far the better choice IMO.

Looking forward to more of the new N20 but as I said, the "feel" and the "sound" (crucial to BMW-philes) needs some work.

This is expected from a 4-cyl turbo or otherwise. Thanks for the honest review. I believe a 4cyl is acceptable as a base car for a 1, 3, x1, x3 etc, but the Z4 is held to higher standards - it should have a throaty 6 cylinder or higher - NA or otherwise, all models from base to ... (M?)

Why Z4...

MARKETING! 4 cylinders have historically been assumed as weak

There is nothing like the smooth performance of an I-6 BMW motor. I'll pass on the 4 banger.

i am actually thinking of getting a bmw (havent decided which one yet) with an inline NA6 cause in a few years the motoring world will loose one of its iconic engines beeing replaced by an engine you can find in pretty much every car maker these days.
No steering feel in new bmw´s, no NA 6L, FWD. Can someone tell me what makes bmw so speciall these days? if you replace the badge one woudnt be able to tell if its a merc, an audi, a lexus, etc your driving.

Sure electric power steering and fwd and diesel and turbo engines are a sign of the times but come on. Off set it somewhere else like the mini brand or new i brand but a Z4 roadster, a car with an open top when engine sounds plays such a big part in the experience that is a roadster bmw could avoid this.
A-MEN

That is why I chose a 128i over a 135i and I am now having quite a crisis on whether I want to upgrade to a 1M. The I6 rewards you when you exercise it properly and I don't have to worry about a a future HPFP problem.

This is the second post romancing the beloved 4-cylinder of the E30. Being a person who actually was of age during the rise of the E30 (and owned a '89 325i for 18 years), your admiration is highly unfounded. When the E21 came to America, it was only offered as a four cylinder and the car was slow and unreliable once the catalytic version debuted in 1980. It was so bad that BMW finally offered the E30 with an I6 all of 121 HP. The famous ETA M20. Not until BMW refitted the ETA with a decent cylinder head an created the 168HP M20 motor in the 325i was an E30 any good. BMW's only other 4-cylinder was the E30 M3, which had problems of its own. In '91 came the modern-engined E30 318 as a last gasp before the E36 debuted. I have a version of this motor in my Wife's Z3 1.9 L, and it in no way is anywhere as nice an engine as any BMW I6.

It will be soon that the only naturally aspriated I6 BMW vehicle sold as new will be the soon-to-be released BMW K1600 MOTORCYCLE! Pitty.

I figure it looks like any other E92 M3. I would like to see pics of the seats, head liner, front end for rock chips ect. Also the weather stripping, for signs if dry rot. Sorry to sound anal, I just remember the little issues my E46 M3 had the bothered me, I bought that car second hand.
