I considered a merc SLK55 when shopping for a roadster last year. I just liked the styling of the Z4 better. After you mentioned your switch I went to the web site to build one. It appears that the push-button start is a $650 option(seems dumb) and the maintenance is an additional charge based on mileage limit and area of purchase.

The carfax shows my old E90 headlight was replaced in US port, before they deliver to me. So I guess you can get a report to see if there is any damage during the transportation?

BMW dealer's have a "tracking" system for your car and it shows everything that happens to it from manufacture, transport, to delivery. I had no idea how detailed it was until I discovered our e89 was wrecked some time between when I dropped it off in Munich to delivery in Texas. Then I went directly to my salesman (very pissed) and he pulled up the "system" and it had a couple of codes in my car's journal. He said they meant it was wrecked and repaired but only a manager could pull the details. I went straight to the sales manager's office and the rest is history.
Sorry for the thread hijacking. I clearly need to drive an SLK AMG though to really decide if I like mercs or not. |

Haven't driven one, but from reviews I've watched, the SLK AMG chassis tuning can't really cope with the engine's torque. In comparison, when it comes to massive rear wheel power through the years Porsches and Ferraris horsepower/torque specifications have been in step with their ability to tune their chassis.

I'm late to this thread but I just drove the slk55 (i have an e93 m3)... It was pretty disappointing. Im not a track guy or a tuner nut, just love a fast convertible. Here's where that car totally missed for me:
* cheap interior - reminiscent of a GM; the carbon fiber was so plastic, and the switchgear just felt very cheap; even magic sky control was ho-hum. The trunk... So cheap * where's the v8? Couldn't hear it and could barely feel it - you really had to romp on it to feel anything, and yes the top was down * the transmission... Ug the transmission. I drive my m3 in manual only, never even used auto, and I love mdct. The SLK "wet clutch pack" is horrible... Yes i could get used to it, but why? I'm a transmission buyer now as much as engine Anyway, no offense to slk lovers, just my opinion, ymmv |

Are you hooked on a hardtop convertible? If not, is a porsche boxster or convertible 911 an option? If you like the transmission in your bimmer (manual or dct), you will probably be disappointed with the merc. They have paddle-shift, but it is actually a true automatic. Nice for touring, but can't shift as fast as dct, and less engaging than manual. Just my opinion.

Thanks everybody ! Looks like SLK AMG isn't a good choice. Before ordering Z4, I checked out SLK (non-AMG). Didn't like the body style and drive. I thought AMG will make a differene. I will have to research on other cars.
As of now I parked the Z4 and driving a rental |

As for the SLK, it's ok looking but too blunt and angular. They had the advantage of coming out after the Z4 and still failed to make a superior car. That's a fail right there. |
