Volcanic Ash
I'm supposed to leave tomorrow for ED and there's this freakin' volcano trying to mess up my plans! I mean, I've only been planning this for something like a YEAR. WTF!!! So far Munich airport is still open. Keeping my fingers crossed.

dont risk your life, that ash apparently really messes with the engines on planes.. its not worth it in my opinion. In the mid 80's they say that a jumbo jet went through an ash cloud and all 4 engines quite, and they were very very lucky to get them started again after a drop of 20 thousand feet.

Not that it helps but here you can follow the status of the ash over Europe. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/aviation...aacuk_vag.html There will be some windows when it's flyable in some areas, but it comes and goes. And the authories finally decides if the airspace will be open or closed. Expect a re-route/alternate destination. Maby by train or bus as the final leg. I hope you get there. |

For those of you living in Europe:
Volcanic ash is EXTREMELY abrasive! Regular street dust is likely to contain some volcanic particles over the next few weeks or months. Make sure you rince your car thoughroughly (with a Karcher pressure washer) before having it washed, or you'll find it all scratched! Also change your air filters more often this summer. |

Rinse - definitely. Pressure washer rinse - not so sure. High pressure forcing grit into the paint can't be good. My two cents worth. I've never been a big fan of pressure washers on auto paint.

Cancellations and delays are creeping into the Munich airport, but my flight is still scheduled to depart tomorrow. This really sucks...I'm praying that this goes off as planned. Luckily my ED is not until Tuesday, so if I have to leave late I've got a buffer built in.

being 90 miles south of Frankfurt, today was the first day that I have not seen a single plane or contrail, a bit spooky, and here are the latest stats as of midnight 16 Feb 2010:
Airspace closed: Belgium Czech Republic Denmark Estonia (until at least 0000 GMT Saturday) Finland (all commercial flights grounded) Hungary Latvia Netherlands Slovakia Switzerland Partial closures: Austria France (northern airspace, with Paris airports closed until 1200 GMT Saturday) Germany (most airports closed) - Munich is closed from this evening until tomorrow [Saturday] morning Italy (northern airspace closed until 1200 GMT Saturday) Lithuania (air traffic control leaving decision to fly to individual companies) Norway (limited flights in north) Poland Republic of Ireland (most airspace opened Friday) Sweden (northern airspace opened Friday) UK (some restrictions lifted) The last time this volcano erupted was 1811, and it lasted for 2 years. No offense to the Icelandic folks - but if you can't take care of your volcano then maybe you shouldn't have one... |

Hey ChuckB, thanks for the update...much appreciated. As of now, my flight is not canceled. We're supposed to land 8:30 Sunday morning in Munich. Boy I hope the airport has recovered by then.

@jparnes1
MUC is closed until Sat noon CET. Most of the parking space is used as many planes landed here yesterday that were supposed to land in Frankfurt or London. So it will take some time to get back to normal here. UPDATE: MUC will be closed until Sunday. @VintageBMW "Death to volcanos?"" Not possible as Eyjafjallajoekull is not in Texas. I know your airline is working hard on a solotion. Start checking if there are any rental cars or traintickets to find from Italy or Spain. So far they still have a good forecast down there. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/aviation...1271483349.png Holding my thumbs! |

It is unlikely that your plane to MUC is taking off today. The volcano is still smoking heavily as you can see on this Live Cam. http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajoku...thorolfsfelli/ And a high pressure area over Germany keeps the ash cloud in place. Good luck and have a save trip. |

The volcanic ash must have clogged up the Doppler radar - all I got was a blank image with the little wheel going 'round and 'round.
Maybe jparnes1 in the air since his plane doesn't land until Sunday? Hopefully |
