Why didn't BMW brand the iS an 'M'?
Why didn't BMW brand the iS an 'M'?
Let's be honest, there's no chance of a V8 Z4, not in the ever more expensive world of petrol stations and car tax ... especially when you consider that the next M3 will almost certainly not have 8 cylinders. So whats the iS missing that would make it an 'M'? Is it a cynical marketing move so BMW can make even more profit from a yet more expensive member of the Z4 family? Surely they aren't going to squeeze even more power out of that 6 cylinder engine?? If any car in the range is suitable for an 'M' version, we all know the Z4 is, so whats going on here BMW?? |

#1 maybe they're gonna leave the M division for everything like the "black series" and the "IS" like the "plain AMG" series and then everything else
#2 maybe they don't want the Z4 being in a "better" position than the M3 because of heritage #3 maybe they're just gonna nickel and dime everything (seriously, there's a handful of 3 series cars that come in over the M3's base price and the 550i GT surpasses the base 7 series) #4 maybe BMW is being run by a bunch of schmucks or geniuses depending which side of the table you're on #5 maybe the schedule of the new M's bumps heads with the issue of a Z4 M and 1 series M and so they're holding off until a refresh

IMHO - at the very least, to make the iS an M it needs tighter suspension, crisper steering, bigger brakes and a tad more power (plus, maybe save a few pounds). it would not take much to be sure but those would make it a true M car

What's this fuzz with M?
I'll have an Z in a few days and to my knowledge Z is the last letter in the english alphabet. First (well almost) there was A (Ford) and now some of us got the final, Z! There will never be anything after that! |

Yeah, if BMW ever intends to do a Z4 ///M again, they have upped the stakes by putting out the 35is w/ 335 hp which is right in line with the old ///M Coupe/Roadster. Logically, a new Z4 ///M would have to substantially more. Could get very interesting.

You are missing the most important component, a Limited Slip Diff...that is what M cars are all about.

actually I believe steering wheel, dials, gearlever, door sills with M logo are really not enough to call Z4M this 35is.....that's it...

...and it cheapens the brand when you put M badges all over the place in a non M car.

We see ///M as a standard for high performance driving, but (and you guys are going to hate me for saying this) I don't think BMW really sees it that way. It seems to me that BMW uses the "///M" as a marketing tool, no different than it's other icons.
