Mothers Clay Bar experience

I'm about to do a Mothers California gold clay bar application to my deep sea blue..... unless someone stops me !

Since new and 6 waxings ago I've had a nagging roughness or prickliness to the freshly waxed surface on the hood, roof and etc. It always looks perfect but doesn't have that silky smooth feel that I'd always been accustomed to after waxing. Mostly just on the top surfaces.

I've watched all the u tubes videos and read everything I could so far so as not to screw it up but my comfort level is still week.

- spray the surface and the bar repeatedly
- no pressure in the rubbing
- fold bar often
- discard a bar if dropped

I'm ready to go with the kit but part of me says to leave well enough alone. Anyone out there do their car yet ? I'm particularly interested in the results on the dark colors that are more susceptible to fine swirls.

Garage List
Havbe never used Mother's but Zaino products are awesome !!!

I have used their products and claying recommendations and procedure several times on older BMW's and have always had gr8 success. Part of the success is due to the quality of their products. The finish has been smoother than a baby's ass easily maintained using their Final Touch as a dusting spray.....

Good Luck !!

Used mother's clay on my alpine white z4 and was successful. On darker cars, you can't see the contamination as with lighter color paint. It removes stuff that your finger nails will never reach. I have a pack of clay in my garage all the time, especially if the car was left outside in the sun for long periods, where contaminates embed themselves in the clear coat.

i also get the rough feeling "orange peel" type thing. I'm also going to try claying to see if that's all it needs.
I've done it before on older cars, pretty easy and has great results.
Let me know how you get on as I'm gonna try it when the better weather starts coming in!?

No worries...claying is very safe on your paint. Just keep it wet and you're good to go.

Thanks all... The video was good too.... I liked the tip of using the glass to get it flat before starting.

The weather is getting nice now so I plan to do it this coming week. I'll report back how it turns out.

Quite safe

Agree with the other posters, claying very safe.
Stunning results.....wish I'd heard of it years ago.

Have done one half of the bonnet (hood) and propose to show this to the dealer. To demonstrate to them what utter rubbish their after sales product is. Some stuff called A-Glaze - useless.

Yessir, we've "A-Glazed" your car free of charge they said on delivery.

AAARGH, I thought
AND I was correct, they'd made a complete hash of it, surface feels as rough as sandpaper! As for the stuff they put on the windscreen.....useless.....cannot see properly in the rain at night because of smearing! Took me ages to get that off

Conclusion....as always, you get the best results by doing it yourself and staying away from all these fancy after-sales-finishes!

Enjoy............

The verdict is in.... Clay is cool ! even if the photographer is not so much....

Buffing the final wax coat was a quiet thing for the first time.

Thanks to all who input.

The surface is smooth as silk now. I run my fingers down the hood and it's like glass. Not a bump or prickle to be found. The claying process was easier than the washing or the waxing part. It was so slippery with the cleaner on the surface and the clay that that it really didn't feel like it did anything. Like rubbing ice on ice. Did my best to avoid hitting dry areas and the temptation to move along to new areas without buffing dry the previous area was always there but all in all, I don't think I introduced any new fine scratch flaws and buffing the finish coat of wax was much easier without having to redundantly buff due to all the little specs that would grab the wax and make little comet trails.
It feels great and it's a relief to know that I don't have to live with the roughness... even though it was never a visual issue it just bothered me to touch it an feel the graininess...

Sorry for the poor lighting in the photo, the color is actually white in deep sea blue... A couple feet deeper than it was before. The susceptibility to fine scratches is the same as the black and for the most part I've been able to keep the pure clear look... so far.
Washing when cool and in shade, mild black magic wax... lots of fresh microfiber towels, etc...

Think loosing the side "35" emblems helps make it look cleaner and more polished also. Did the same with mine.
