Yes, you should never operate the roof without the engine running anyway.

Even though from the factory BMW allow you to do this from the key fob?

As it clearly states on page 25. attached

"Due to the high current consumption of the retractable hardtop of up to 40 amps, the hardtop should only be operated when the battery charger is connected or the engine is running."

So the function to open it or close it from the key fob is erroneously provided by BMW...?

I don't understand their logic on that. Do not operate your roof with the engine off. But at the same time, "let's make it convenient for you to do that". To me it would only make sense that you have a separate power supply to the roof when using your fob.

Excellent timing of a subject of interest. I just purchased a battery tester to monitor the status of my 4 1/2 year old battery. The tester not only permits the open voltage test but performs more advanced tests of the battery's ability to hold a charge, as well as, tests of the starting and charging system. However, to perform these advanced test, you must enter the battery type (SLI, FLAt, SPL or GEL) and the applicable battery test rating (CCA, din, IEC, En, or CA (MCA). Does anyone have insight into what battery type and rating is applicable for the battery originally installed in the 2011 Z4 3.01?

Ya, BMW wants to give us this convenience ftn but it's kinda like the LC, can't overuse it. Silly if you ask me, like putting the trunk release as the same as the alarm.

I had to give up on opening the trunk with the key fob. 90%+ of the time I just set off the alarm repeatedly while trying to do it.

Thankfully the panic alarm is disabled in the uk so no boot/trunk opening dramas.
