Differences between Sdrive 20i and 28i

Dear All,

I am considering to buy a Z4 but in belgium, it is difficult to consider to buy the 28i ad the taxes in will be almost 4000 eur extra just to buy it...

I understand that the motor and the car are the same but (consumption as well)

Do you think I may consider to by a 20i (automatic) and remap it like a 28i?

Thanks for your help !

I live in Belgium and had my 20i delivered exactly one month ago. I had/have the same issue. The 28i is 7000 euro extra, extra taxes, ...

There are rumors there will be a fix soon to get the 20i to the 28i bhp. For now I'm just sticking with the stock power as it is pretty good. I'd just buy the 20i and use the 7k for extra options like nav & premium sound etc ...

Do you mean by tuning? Because that doesn't make much sense if BMW plans to do it. What would be the point of the 28i if you can get the same power on the 20i but for cheaper?

No doubt someone will start tuning the 20i for more power, and I'd guess you'll get close to the 28i but not the same as the 28i has different injectors to handle to load. Also, getting 260bhp+ out of a 2.0 will likely result in component failure... get ready to melt turbos and burst head gaskets!

I'll stick with the 35i which has real guts and at 400BHP (ESS) is as fast as you want to go in rear wheel drive!

There is no difference in parts between the 20i and 28i

It is just a matter of remapping and 'unlocking' some sensors in the powerbox as far as I've read.

Telling the 35i is better is not relevant since the question was about the differences between the 20i or the 28i.
That's like asking the difference between a 530D and a 535D and advising them, hey, get an M5.

In Belgium taxes for buying a car as a company car are ridiculous now. I planned on buying a Cayman first but paying over 10k (same for the 35i) a year as an EXTRA tax on top of the road tax, insurance and the first 'new car' subscription tax (not sure how to say it in english). I personally would have paid over 1000 euro's a month in TAXES & insurance ALONE without a single fuel fillup or even buying/renting the car

Just get the 20i and wait a little, im sure the tuners will get their hands on the 20i sooner or later. Its a beautiful car and no matter which engine it has, people will appreciate it just by having it parked

Bought Z4 2.8iA last autumn, didn't test 2.0 at all. Reason was MB, I tested 250 SLK with 201 hp and it was clear it's not enough for a roadster...

28i has also a 2.0L engine... In your country the taxes are growing proportional with the power of the car or are related to engine capacity ?

Forget the 2.0/2.8. Get the 3.5

Both and now they are actually using CO2 emissions so the 20i or 28i is the only logic choice. I had to pay 10k euro's extra a year in company taxes if I would have bought a Porsche Cayman. Z4 is 'only' 4,4k on top of taxes, insurance, ...

What a ridiculous response. He asked for the difference between the 20i and 28i, no need to give such a response as it is useless and not on-topic.
If you want to drive a 35i in Belgium you're good for a minimum of 2000 euro's a month in gas prices, taxes, etc, etc, ... Not all countries are as car-friendly and gasprice-friendly as the USA....

You probably don't even pay a dollar for 1 liter of high octane fuel there while here we pay over 1.7 EURO / liter which is about 2.2 dollars?
I drive the N20 engine block and I have about 600-700 euro's a month in fuel alone, 35i would be over a 1000. Just for fuel? Not worth to me that kind of money
