The E89 Z4 has ridden off into the sunset. The very last E89 Z4 rolled off the line at BMW's Regensburg, Germany plant a week ago - on August 22. It was a Z4 sDrive35is in Valencia Orange Metallic.

The E89 Z4 has sold more than 115,000 copies globally since its introduction in 2009.

The Z4 will be replaced by the Z5 (see news/photos), a product of BMW's joint sports car platform venture with Toyota.

I'm amazed that it was in production for so long. For some reason I thought it ended some years back. I also thought that it had started production before 2009.

Perception: How does it work?

I understand the roadster market is pretty much dead/non-existent relative to everything else...

But with that said, the E89 Z4 has to be the most under appreciated, most neglected model BMW ever managed in recent memory.

the Z3 was a POS. Z4 was a much better car.

Had first gen Z4 which I lemoned, but they at least looked better than outgoing model.
Current model just look so blend and not exciting to drive at all. Only thing it does good is the driving position IMO.

Not really. Otherwise:
- Porsche wouldn't have bothered with a new Boxster
- Mazda wouldn't have launched a new Miata
- Fiat wouldn't have re-tasked the Miata as a resurrected 124
- Audi wouldn't be offering the redesigned TT in roadster form
- Tesla wouldn't be considering one (much less designing one) for a post-Model 3 launch
- Honda wouldn't be about to launch a roadster version of the NSX
- Mercedes wouldn't be offering not just one (SL), but two (SLK) -- no: three! (GT) -- into the forseeable future
- Aston Martin
- Jaguar F-Type
- Nissan Z

and finally ...
- BMW wouldn't be messing with a Z5 replacement.

I think what you meant was the 'affordable' roadster market is 'pretty much dead' -- which is largely the case. But the Z5 won't be affordable, so there's that. The roadster market is very much alive above $50K or so.

This Z4 was designed with luxury and comfort in mind, not with very good dynamics.
They also couldn't release an M variant due to these facts.
Z5 will be again a proper sporty roadster 😏

BMW has changed the strategy with the next 6, i8 roadster and of course Z5

Z4 looked great but no way I'd ever buy one over a Cayman or a Boxster and that is what BMW absolutely must address with the Z5 or I expect it might be the last of the Z cars being as there is allegedly no business case for the more competitive 911 to Ferrari sectors

Good looking cars but too heavy and waaay too overpriced. Hoping they rectify that with the Z5.

That's just what BMW wants you to believe.

The roadster market doesn't appear to have any issues over at Porsche or Mazda ...

I guess you could throw in affordable too but even the cheaper roadsters like the Miata, they only sell on average 5-6k a year, the TT is around 2500 so while manufacturers are still making them, they don't really sell relative to everything else so it's a very, very small market.

Perhaps my words were over-exaggerating a bit, but the roadster market is insignificant.

A Shame no M Version was ever built. Pair it with an S65 or a S55 and it would have been a great car.

I drove the "is" version and really like it. The biggest issue to me was that it felt like it was priced too high.

Z4 U.S. Sales - http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01...s-figures.html

U.S. sales total for past 7 years - 20,017

2009 - 3523
2010 - 3804
2011 - 3479
2012 - 2751
2013 - 2480
2014 - 2151
2015 - 1829

Boxster U.S. Sales http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01...s-figures.html

U.S. sales total for past 7 years - 20,300

2009 - 1909
2010 - 2177
2011 - 1773
2012 - 2894
2013 - 4570
2014 - 3875
2015 - 3102

Neither are/were big sellers, and most seem to think the Z4 was irrelevant and the Boxster was such a great seller.

For the above time period I think the Boxster was redesigned in 2011 (2012 model year) and 2015 (2016 model year), and the Z4 never?
