Great forum for helping the community.
I am going to give mine a careful look when I get home.
My OEM warranty ends 6-30-13. I want in under the BMW clock if I have an issue.

Took my 2009 Z4 35i into Grand River BMW (an hour west of Toronto) this morning. Once I mentioned the issue to my SA, he immediately knew what I was talking about. There is a Service Bulliten on it---PUMA 31209902-05. The dealership went ahead and ordered both the passenger and driver side tail lamp eventhough it was only the driver side that was delaminated.

As per invoice, they ordered the Protection Foil, Snap-Lock Coupling, Adhesive Pad, Tail light left and Tail light right. It is back ordered from Germany and waiting time is around 2 weeks.

Dave, consider yourself lucky to have it replaced by this Thursday. Maybe I should service my car at Downtown BMW.

Without this forum guys, I would not have know about this issue.

Thanks everyone for your valued contribution to this awesome board.

Just wanted to add my thanks to the OP for this thread (why I love ZPost)!

I checked my tail lights yesterday & yep... I have the issue as well (in both lights). I doubt I would have noticed it without knowing what to look for. I have checked, periodically, for condensation and could never see any.

Coincidentally, I'm scheduled for my "Battery Cable" recall next week & I'll discuss replacement of the tail lights with the SA then - service bulletin in hand.

Thanks again!

Actually my car is serviced at Mississauga BMW. Great bunch. NEVER have any issues with them. As for only replacing the right tail light, they did note that IF the left one eventually suffers the same fate, even out of warranty, they'll replace it under warranty "...because I reported the issue while the vehicle was still under warranty..."....NICE!!

Just back about 1/2 now from getting it replaced.

Probably the aero-heating at 188 mph keeps mine sealed.
You reached 188 mph?! Mods?

This is the one I found...

http://www.allworldauto.com/tsbs/NHT...in_380477.html

I figured I'd jot down the numbers and take this in... hopefully there won't be any issues.

Ok so I just inspected my tail lights today and yes, one of my tail light has this problem. About 1 inch long. I guess I will bring this issue up among with a few other minor problems when I take it in for service.

I think often BMW will honour the replacement if they see cracks, But still doesn't deflect from the fact there is a fundamental flaw in the design of the rear allowing water ingress and they would like to blame the crack.

Finally got around to the inspection of my tail lights, looking for the de-bonding issues. Sure enough, the drivers side has the un-mistakable sign of de-bonding. The passenger side is OK. As my manufacturer warranty ends this month, on 6-30-13 and I did purchase the BMW Gold Extenison plan, I am still taking the car in under the OEM warranty to discuss this with the dealer this week. I thought I read somewhere that BMW put out a notice on this but I cannot seem to find it so I can present it to the dealer. Am I wrong?

Update On 6-27-13- 4 days before my OEM warranty expired, I took the Z into my local dealer to have them review the rear taillights for the delamination/de-bonding issues. See my 2 pictures in the above thread. I used this forum and the member pictures as prrol of a larger scale issue known by BMW and then had the service manager photograph and compared my tail lights in refernece to all the photos of the delaminated tail lights on this forum. I just got the call from the dealer, they agreed there is an issue and have ordered under full warranty BOTH Rear tail lights.

Thanx to this forum, my 2009 35i is getting 2 brand newtaillight, under full warranty. FANTASTIC.

Nicely done. I've had both mine done now as a gesture by BMW outside warranty.

Finally my new tail lights came in for my car and were installed today, under Warranty. It took them 2 hours. They were on order from Germany for 4 weeks, according to the Dealer. As stated above, the Left light showed the signs of debonding BUT the Right looked fine. However as reported, I discussed with my dealer doing both and hey agreed as goodwill to replace both under warranty.

FYI Tail Part numbers are:
Left Tail Light 63-21-7-191-777
Right Tail Light 63-21-7-191-778

Here is the cost/value of a new complete tail light for our cars. Same light and part number is listed for 2009-2013. The parts list did not list compatability with 2014 model years.

ELECTRICAL / REAR LAMPS / TAIL LAMPS / Tail lamp assy
