IMHO, the NA straight six is something unique and special in BMW's lineup. Not many other makes offer that engine configuration. I thoroughly enjoy that engine in my Z4, and it's one of the reasons I bought the car. I wouldn't really have been interested in the car with a turbo four, and I sure would not have paid north of $50K for one. Turbo fours can be powerful and efficient, but they're just not in the same league of refinement and driveability of the six. Not even close. Been there, done that. Unless BMW plans to push the Z4 downmarket in the US, I can't see how a turbo four is going to cut it. Not in this price range.

I drove a VW GTI back to back with the R32. No comparison IMHO. While the Turbo 4 is fast off the line, it does not have the smooth, turbine like power of the NA 6 cylinder. As far as mileage, I can get 30 mpg with my Z4 cruising at 60-65. The R32 revs higher in 6th gear so mileage is lower, about 25-26 at 60 mph.

There is no smoother engine than an I6 and I sure hope BMW never abandons this configuration.

I don't know how much the BMW would be better but as a comparison, the Audi's 2.0T 4 in the TTS, it was seriously lacking in torque and felt quite weak. The a/c took forever to cool the cabin and there was a very noticeable turbo lag. One had to rev it very high in order to feel some power. I also didn't like the price pt...it was so close to the Z4 and it is only a 4 cyl...why would anyone pay so much for just a 4 cyl?

BMW is not getting rid of the I6 any time soon. They are only phasing out the naturally aspirated I6.

Don't need to -- there are certain inescapable characteristics of fours and turbo fours that BMW can't change. Manufacturers have been playing with the inline four cylinder turbo for years, with lots of variations (I have probably owned 6-7 of them, including one of my current vehicles). It's just not possible for that type of engine to compete with an inline six IMHO. The straight six is one of the few perfectly balanced engine configurations in existence.

I am being optimistic that BMW will give us an I4 with TwinScroll or Twin Turbo with wads of torque unlike your typical jap sucker. We all know I6 is king, but BMW may surprise us.

A Dutch magazine published more details about the new 4 cylinder turbo engine. There is no statement about the E89 MY12.

The X1 xDrive28i is the first model to use this 245hp twin-power (turbo) engine. They also state that it will have significant more torque than the 310nm of the N52.

what does that means? the actual X3 28i has 245hp? reviews states is as 215hp!

I really hope BMW will bring us the Z4 23i "or possibly a 28i version" with the DCT gearbox, that would be great for those like me who can't afford the formidable 35i

Seems BMW isn't the only one reverting to smaller displacement engines. The 2012 U.S. C-class will have a twin turbo 1.8L 4-cylinder making 201 HP and 229 lb-ft.

Third paragraph from the bottom details the new TT 4-cylinder that's replacing the base model V6.

This says it all - of course the MB C Class is a heavy little beast but look at those underwhelming performance figures.

Quote:
While the manual transmission departs the C-Class, the four-cylinder power returns for the first time since 2006. The I-4 is found in the base C250 model, displaces 1.8-liters, and uses twin-turbos to produce 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque. This will scoot the C-Class to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds according to Mercedes and achieve 24 mpg combined.
Uhmmm . . . can anyone say Sports Car!?

Yeah, the current base model C-class weighs about 200 lbs. more than, for instance, a 328i automatic (the C-class is auto only). And, the MB 1.8T makes about 45 HP and 30 lb-ft LESS than the BMW 2.0T does. Meaning, the turbo 4-cylinder 3-series should handily outperform the base model C-class, all while achieving similar or better fuel economy.

so it was the New X1 28i turbo, not the X3 28i as I "don't know why" thought :-)
"brand new 2.0L gas powered 4-Cylinder engine which uses BMWs TwinPower turbo technology, good for 245HP and 350Nm of torque..."

http://e84.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=477885

wow wow wow available with 8 Speed gearbox too! when are we gonna see that engine inside a Z!

Hope the new 4 will replace the 2.5L found in the 23i Z not the 3.0L of the 30i :-(

The new 4 cylinder could be faster than the 30i. More torque, a little bit less max. power and atleast 60Kg lighter.

The question is which engine will replace the N52B25 (2.5L)? The 2.0L NA direct injection what's currently be used in the 3 series or a de-tuned version of this new twin-turbo engine?

The replacement for the lower output N52 engines that make around 200hp to 215hp (which, by the way includes not just the 2.5L N52, but also the low power 3.0L N52 as found in the X1 2.5i currently, for example) will either be a lower tune version of the brand new TwinPower Turbo 4, or it will be the upcoming 1.6L turbo 4 that is slated to be used across the mini range as well as the FWD 1 series BMW models. It will not be the naturally aspirated 2.0L 4 cylinder as that will soon be phased out as well.
