Failed Roof Hydro Unit
So...had the roof's hydro unit fail on me.
BMW dealer wanted best part of £1050 to replace (car is out of warranty). Given that it's a unit that isn't used much really when you consider that I'm in the UK (not known for it sunshine climate) and given you're looking at approx 50secs for the roof to do a complete cycle (open and close), if I claimed that the unit had done more than a couple of hours work then I would probably be exaggerating. Anyway, I asked the SA what the possibility of BMW meeting me somewhere along the line, he apparently made some calls, pulled some strings and BMW agreed to pay for the part as a gesture of goodwill leaving me to pay for the labour which worked out to be half the price. Still a lot of money but better than being handed a bill for £1050. Labour cost still seems high and I was wondering if anyone knew how easy or hard it is to replace the unit? I'm guessing it's not a simple plug and play item (given the hydraulic nature of the unit) is it? Don't suppose anyone knows how to replace one? |

I think you are exploring a new frontier for the E89 community!
Might be worthwhile to buy some liquor for the techs and keep on the service advisor's good side if he is able to cut the bill in 1/2 |

Well this is the question I've been asking myself. Was the quoted price (£1050) to replace the hydro unit a fair price. Or was it grossly over inflated so that by charging me half the price they were really charging me a fair price?
I really expected to have to fight to get a goodwill from BMW. The SA seemed to get is result very quickly. Was wondering if to replace the unit it's approx 4hrs work? Any idea? |
