OEM alarm doesn't seem to work

Is there anyway that I could have disabled my alarm system?
When I lock the car, I do not see the light below the mirror flash.
Unless I am missing something, I see that you arm and disarm the system from locking and unlocking the doors.
Is there more to it than that? Does it not arm if the key fob is close or disarm itself when it detects the key fob?
Thanks in advance for any assistance given.

Just because you have a clown nose on your mirror doesn't mean you have an alarm. Alarms were optional on MY 11.

One way to test is to lock the car with the roof down using the key fob and reach for something in the center console in front of the shifter.

In my MY 2012 this sets off the alarm and I would imagine previous years would have the same alarm functionality, if the alarm was installed.

No alarm on my window sticker, was fooled by the empty clown nose.

I suppose the only saving grace is that people "assume" that they have an alarm...

Surely a car that looks like that would have an alarm.

Nothing is free, so one way or another, if you have the alarm, you are going to have to pay for it.

For 2011 and prior, if BMW made the alarm part of the standard equipment, then the base MSRP would have been about $500 higher.

Good thing they did not add it to the standard equipment. That way the base MSRP remained lower as it did not include the price of the alarm, and we all had the OPTION as to whether we want to get one or not. I did not want it, so I didn't have to pay for it.

Car alarms have become nothing but white noise. No one pays attention to them anyway.

iirc, prior to 2010, most bmws came pre wired for the alarm, but needed one extra module or something from the dealer for it to work/be activated

meaning the cost and work had already been done, they were just charging for extra profit
