Replacement key

I lost my spare key. BMW dealer is asking $280 + tax. It sounds pricey.

Is there any alternate way to get a replacement key ?

I saw on ebay the shell case for $40. I guess it does not contain a transponder... The blade is uncut (but OK easy to cut at local locksmith).

Other question: there is no valet / emergency key for E89. But can we start the engine with the key only, somehow ? Or is the transponder absolutely mandatory ?

Last question: how can I get a transponder ?

Anyone can help / provide some hint / guidance ?

Thanks.

Key needs to be programmed. No $40 unit is going to replace the OEM.

I lost my key before. You will need to order one using your VIN. You cannot fabricate it. I paid 350 for it.

That's the fair price,
If you lost both keys, this will be a different story.
They need to replace the whole system including master control, I don't know how much it would be?

That's pretty much what transponder keys cost these days. My Ducati only came with one, so I thought I might order a spare. I reconsidered when I discovered the price, which was more than your dealer wants for the BMW key. If that price includes cutting the blade, then it's an even better deal. Many locksmiths charge $50 and up to cut that type of key when you provide the blank.
