I tired it - then replaced it.
Mine makes great noises without needing to unplug the vacuum hose.

I tried it and it was not was not worth it. It is closed only on low revs when cold. I observed the behaviour a little during the summer and noticed that it opens anyway in less than a minute even if you just idle the car (you can hear a click if you have top down).

I also found the change in startup sound unpleasant. With stock the sound is "even" during this first minute transition period.

...and now for the counter-point....

I've had mine done ("s" hose removed, vacuum caps installed) for the past year and wouldn't go back to "stock". Love the additional rumble at start up. No change in performance, but didn't expect any. This was all about making it sound better - IMO

Without spending thousands on an aftermarket exhaust system, for me, it was a low cost (carb vacuum plugs) modification that was well worth it.

I unplugged mine 3500 mi ago and was a definite difference in sound and will not go back to the quieter OEM way. I also disagree with the previous poster in that I think the sound is louder and of better quality than before. I have a 35is and I don't know if that makes any difference since the exhaust is different on it than the 30 or 35.

I have CANflap open on my 35is. I agree with Tim - it sounds much better opened.

Wow , sorry to see that happen to you man! But glad to hear you are fine besides a few minor injuries. The car is replaceable; your life isn't!

Hope the situation is in your favor; good luck with everything

Ive tried this also. I Put it back on. Sound was too much like a yob car with a blown exhaust. Much prefer the class of a low rumble and then that crackle and pop when its floored or the DCT cracks between gears, awesome and the only reason I've not yet succumbed to a 28i lol...

The good thing about this modification is that the investment is next to zero, and if you don't like it, you can go back to stock in about 5 minutes. Don't you wish all our modifications were this cheap and easy?

Zhehbka basically did it for me, and it sounds much better. Especially at idle and low RPM

I just did the Golf T mod earlier this afternoon and would recommend it to anyone who may be on the fence about it. I personally was worried that it would sound worse or that the drone others have complained about, but it really is a subtle (but definitely noticeable) change to the exhaust note. In colder weather, it also has the added benefit of allowing smoke to come out of the right exhaust which just looks better.
