N54 service requirements

My car is fully 6 years old now. It's stock, runs fine and I've keep it looking in almost show room condition and the car has accumulated 33,000 miles now. Engine servicing in that time has been mostly just oil changes. Nothing outside routine maintenance with the mileage and time.

What I'm wondering is what other servicing should be planning to do after 6 years and 40,000 miles.

Does BMW have a specified service interval for this?

I was going to do that, but I was concerned about the oil trapping dust and increasing the wear, so I used a dry silicone lubricant that's meant for garage doors.

No. They consider it a lifetime (100K miles) fill just like tranny fluid and coolant. But common sense tells us otherwise.

I replaced mine at 30k miles. It holds just under 2 liters anyway. Such a small investment. I probably won't change it again until 80k miles. Cleaned out the original fluid/metal residue.

What's the access like on the diff plugs? Does the rear end need to be up on jack stand or can I get to the drain/ fill plugs by rolling car back to the edge of my sloped driveway?

First of all, there's no drain plug. And you have to get it up on jacks stands so the car is level.

Recommend changing blinker fluid every 45,000.

So how do you drain the fluid without a drain plug?

Why would you need to change something that never gets used on a BMW?

You need to get a suction gun to draw out the fluid. It takes about 1 qt. of 75W-90. Then use a pump the screws onto the fresh oil bottle and refill until the oil starts to drip out the hole.

Boy, they really are trying to discourage servicing, aren't they?!

You sure DCT fluid needs changed? Any evidence to show that?

None I 'm afraid, it just sounds logical to me though.

So I was just eyeballing this thread and noticed the suggestion that plugs be changed at 35k miles. I downloaded the BMW maintenance PDF for the 35i and it specifies "about" 45k miles or at the third oil change. My car was just serviced @40k miles and is about to go out of warranty at the end of February. It is approaching 43k miles and I'm wondering why the dealer didn't change the plugs at the last service. It looks like I need to bring this to their attention prior to the maintenance program expiration; correct?

I'm sure you can get the plugs changed if you're that close. I'd ask them.
