New tires go on tomorrow

Finally getting rid of the RFT's tomorrow. America's tire is installing the Conti Extreme DWS. I ordered 265-30-19 & 235-35-19. The 235's are still on a nationwide back order so they ordered in a pair of 225-35-19's to run until the 235's are in. No charge. I thought that was very impressive customer service. So looking forward to non-RFT skins.

Tires are on. In the short drive from the tire place back to the office it already feels much better. Planning to log some miles this weekend and push the tires and will have a full report after that.

The 265's on the rear look better but a 275 would be ideal. There is plenty of room. My bet is a 295 would not be an issue. If anyone wants inside/outside clearance measurements I am happy to do that.

DOH! I just sent you a PM before I saw this post. Which location offered to give you the 225's until the 235's are back in? I'm going to try to get the same deal.

About 20 miles of freeway and side street driving so far. No hard cornering yet (tomorrow for that). The ride is incredible. On the freeway the RFT's made the rearview mirror vibrate, that is gone. I can actually feel a connection with the road now. I really feels like a different car. Better in every way. Much quieter too. More info tomorrow after a real road test.

If you have at least 19x9 rear wheels go for the 275-30 rears. I did 265's which look better than stock but a 275 is what should have been on from the factory. Plenty of room.

you know..im wondering as much as i want to change these RFT to something else...
what would happen if you were to get a flat?

because it happen to me once on the highway and thankfully the RFT allowed me to get home and even drive to the tire shop couple of days later...but i really don't like the RFTs...

You pull over, call BMW, and they come pick you up. Happened in my M3. M cars don't come with RFTs.

I drove my M3 for 4 years, never had a flat. Adjusted tire pressure of course here and then. In the trunk I had a small compressor plugged into the cigarette lighter for power. Also had some gue to inject into the tire to seal a small leak, never had to use it.

Silver-Bolt,

I have the Continental Contact Extreme DW on my wife's car and she loves them. I like them too - should have ditched the RFTs long ago.

The DWS are the all-season version of the max performance summer Continental ExtremeContact DW. It gets a great write-up but Tirerack reckons the steering response could be better.

What kind of tire pressure you will need for non-RFT. I thought they should be alot lower PSI then the RFT? Any recommendations?

If we get a flat as others have said, AAA/BMW roadside service. I do plan to order a BMW "Mobility kit" which is the plug in compressor and sealant.

As far as tire pressure goes I currently have them set at 35psi all around. Today I will do a chalk test to determine the exact pressure.

Chalk test: A chalk test consists of drawing a line across the full width of the tire. Drive around the block making sure to include both left and right turns. Pull over and look at your chalk marks. If the mark is completely gone on each tire you have the ideal pressure. If the mark is gone in the center but remains at the edge you have too much pressure. If it's gone on the edges but remains in the center your pressure is too low. It may take a few times to get dialed in just right but this is the best way to insure you have the maximum amount of contact patch on the road and maximum tire life.

Also note, if you drive a long distance with the roof down increase your rear tire pressure by 10% above the recommended. If you don't the extra weight in the trunk plus the weight of some luggage will wear your tires prematurely on the inside of the rear tires. This is due to the extra weight and camber angle.

Also, check your tire pressure often, I find that I need to adjust the pressure almost every Monday morning 3 to 5 PSI with those RFT.

You can also chalk the sidewall of all 4 tires (one or more lines perpendicular from the rim onto the tread). After driving hard left and right turns, see how far the chalk has worn down. If past the arrows, into the lettering, the pressure is too low. If not worn on the edge, its too high.

Any fears of losing handling performance due to all-season tires can be put to rest. At least for street driving. I did about 100 miles of highway and in town driving just to scuff in the new tires and make sure the mold release agent was gone. I then hit the twisties with the intent to find the limits of the tires. I pushed them hard and drove considerbly fastr than I should on the street. They didn't slip a it. They stuck like some R-compound tires I have had in the past. I was amazed. I am sure at the track I could find the limits but on the street they are fantastic.

To continue to run RFT's is a sin to the Z. Ditch those hobbles and get some real tires. It truly is a different car. Not just Conti's anything non-RFT will be a huge improvement.

I am glad to hear there are several more converts. I have been running non-RFTs for over 4 years. Perhaps RFT technology will some day make them worthwhile but for now I will ditch them in favor of tires that maximize the enjoyment of my cars.

I'm intrigued with this post. Out of curiosity how many miles have you guys put on your RFT before ditching them. I've got less then 2k miles on mine. But if the difference is night and day then perhaps its worth ditching th RFT asap.
