They did. The E85 Z4 2.5i was just a hair over 2,800 lbs.

The car's design still looks great today. The Z4 35is was the fastest production BMW apart from the M3 at the time in the traffic light race. And is still very good.

So what? Almost every model across the automotive industry got 400 lbs heavier between 2002 and 2009. Those models didn't add all the mechanicals for a retractable hardtop. My point is that it had better power to weight than any other BMW with the same engine during its lifecycle.

I agree on the looks of the E89 - and also the E85. They both still turn heads today and I still get compliments on my E85.

To the extent that the E89 was a sales underperformer, I blame BMW to a significant extent for (1) under-promoting and (2) over-pricing the car.

Its funny cause I would get compliments on my e86 wayyyy more than my e89. Its like you reach a different approachable level once you get into an e89. Now people would stare without approaching but thats exactly what I was going for. I still hang out in my garage and stare at the beauty of the design.

True for BMW, not true for a large percentage of the industry. In fact, quite a few contemporary vehicles of the same generation from other manufacturers weighed less than their predecessors.

And the mechanical roof is but an excuse. The overall weight of the mechanisms of the roof weigh about 200lbs. The E89 is still well over 400 lbs heavier than its predecessor. There's no denying that it is a lot heavier for what it is. For a 2 seat roadster to weight in excess of 3,500 lbs is a shame.

For a point of reference, the E85 M Roadster comes in with a HEAVIER engine (S54 is solid iron block), 330hp (more power), and weighs 500 lbs less than the sDrive35. That, is a HUGE step back.

A very big shame. I feel it would have stepped on toes of the bigger M cars too much for corporate to approve it.

Clearly missed out on a potential classic Z4 M with a S65 to symbolize the GT3.

I always viewed this roadsters as a car for someone who is trying to compensate for some sizing issues, but hey what do I know. I'm just a guy.

May i guess that your loaner was probably not a 3.5iS ? Or perhaps not even a 3.5i ?
You drove it on Sport+ ?
M suspension ?
No - it was a 2006 3.0. Premium pkg, IIRC

That is false. Type 5 of your chosen cars into google and compare for yourself using 2002 as the first year and 2009 as the second. Most gained at least 200 lbs and some over 500 lbs.

Where are you getting your weight figures. The E89 weighs between 3100 lbs and 3300 lbs depending on the engine.

Again where are you getting these weight figures? The lightest E85 is roughly 2850 lbs and the heaviest is nearly 3200 lbs. A gain of up to 250 lbs, most of that is the hardtop roof.

The E85 MRoadie is the heaviest of all E85s and was half a second slower to 60 than the sDrive35is which weighs less than 150 lbs more.

This marks the end of the N54 engine and BMWs with the E development code. It took 48 years for BMW to use up the "E" codes.

Never liked the Z3/4 very much. And now the market has spoken.
Good luck to BMW+Toyota with the "Z5."

Benz owns the high-end convertible/roadster market, such as it is.
Then there are the boutique drop-tops: Aston Martin, Maserati, Porsche, etc.
Maybe the "Z5" can find a niche-within-a-niche in there somewhere.

R.I.P Z4 E89

I drive Z4 since 2010 as fun car. From 2010 till 2015 the Z4 30i and since august 2015 the Z4 35is in Valencia Orange just like the last one produced.

With some modification in suspension and other parts, the Z4 is now sporty enough for me to ride my weekend tours on german main and minor roads with a speed that is close or a little bit above the allowed limits and often also in the alps of Austria or Italy.
For sure a Porsche Boxster might be able to do this things even better, but after a test ride with a Boxster GTS I didn't get the fazination of the engine as I got it from the twin turbo of the 35is.
On top the Boxster would cost me in Germany around € 25.000,- more than the Z4 in my configuration.

So I'm happy to be owner of just a one year old Z4 35is and I'm sure that he will stay for a long time in my garage.
