Could be any number of things. Can you reproduce it when stood still? If so get someone to rev the car while you take a listen around.

Could be wastegate rattle, exhaust, heat shields and quite literally anything else.

I just heard a small metal rattle when at lower speed in the same RPM range. I put the car in the garage and tried to replicate the sound by using the echo inside the garage while rev-ing it a bit. I found the heat shield around the exhaust system was the issue.

If it is waste gate rattle, I read on the E90 threads that the "fix" is to reflash the computer to use less boost / keep the wastegate open slightly to make the rattle go away.

Proceed with caution and make sure that you are crystal clear on the "fix" before you authorize work....

I have the latest software on my car. I was concerned about this fix also. I took my car to the dyno and it registered 300hp, so, only 6 out on claimed hp, and dyno's aren't super accurate, they all differ slightly... the difference could well be the dyno itself, air temp, anything. Whatever this fix is, it doesn't harm output or if it does, its very marginal. Though I did read somewhere that it introduced lag, bmw confirmed this, quite how is another story...
