New Z4's

I was just wondering if anyone here has driven the new (09+) Z4's and what they thought about how they drive. I was also wondering if they handle any better then the 335i. Just curious, not planning on buying one. They just started growing on me a little bit

Go to a dealership and do a test drive. Completely different animal. Hard to describe in words.

I had a Z3, traded it for an M3 then 2 years later I test drove a new Z4 '09 in Phoenix. Came home to Canada , test drove another Z4 and bought it.

A 335 is a gorgeous car but it just isn't a two seat rocket. You HAVE to drive one to get the feeling. Kind of like going from a Gold Wing to a Ducati.

well, I love the 335 - a great car. the Z4 is amazing and the DCT is super cool - my wife loves convertibles with two seats. this is her 3rd Z product and I am sure we will own more Zs in the future

They are quick I'm sure, but the 335i has nearly Identical 0-60 1/4 times.

you have to be careful and take the comments with a grain of salt.

there are owners of the z with normal suspension and others with the sport suspension. some own the Z4 23i, others 30i, others 35i and a handful with the 35is.

on the other hand, some owners are older and in the words of Jeremy Clarkson, "they're fuzzy wheezing little heads will come off", and they might have a different perception on speed and handling... knowwhatimean.

the entire bmw range have different handling characteristics built into them. go and test drive one at your local dealer or if you have a friend with one ask them for a ride.

Very true comments ....and my fuzzy wheezing head fell off at 160mph in my M3 and the neurosurgeons bolted it back on using a little extra crazy glue so I think I'm OK now

The Z4 is definitely faster to 60 mph than the 335i Coupe. Documented 0-60 runs for the new Z4 with DCT have been from 4.3 - 4.8 seconds. The 335i Coupe has been clocked only as fast as 4.8 - 4.9 seconds.

Two advantages the 35i has is that it weighs almost 100 lbs less than the 335i Coupe and has the DCT transmission with launch control, which is superior in shift times to both the manual or Steptronic transmission in the 335i.

According to Road & Track tests, they are nearly identical thru the slalom at 66.2 mph for the Z4 vs 66.4 mph for the 335i.

...and the 335i Convertible weighs almost 4000 lbs, so that's definitely not going to keep up with either car.

BlueZ4AZ: I have a place in Chandler and will be there in September for a couple of days. Is there a local Z4 club or group for drives etc. to get in touch with.

PM me if you can so I don't hijack the thread ....any longer.

sorry about the mini hijack folks.

Right on Memphis1 with you comments about different drivers and models. Like my old 2008 Z4 3.0is compared against the 2009 Z4 Sdrive 3.5i there is no contest between the two like Jeremy Clarkson I love the 2009 Z4 Sdrive 3.5i and gladly gave my 2008 back ~grin~

Yes jayely1, you should drive one at the dealer, words simply cannot describe it you need to see for yourself. Take it from me I drove a M3 for 4 years and the Z4 Sdrive 3.5i feels and performs better then the M3 mind you there is that 2002 to 2009 time slot ~smile~ much has changed in 7 years.

Yes, I did ....

Comparing them is difficult as they are 2 complete different cars for a different audience. I bought the (E92) 335i keeping in mind to be able to take with me 4 people although I was - at that time (2007) - already in for a two-seater

As I loved the 35i engine but wanted at least some difference (engine wise spoken that is), I took the z4 35iS

Never did trackdays with my E92 and probably will not do it with my Z either

there is something about this roadster that makes it special. The design is really perfect. Every line I like, roof up or down. I constantly find myself looking back at it from every angle. It will be timeless for many years.

I went from a M3 to a 2008 Z4 3.0is then to a 2009 Sdrive 3.5i and love it. The M3 is nice however the Z4 much more fun to drive. Check it out at a dealer for yourself.

You really owe yourself a test drive, rather than simply reading an article.

On paper they may look the same... but on the road, the experience... "the feel" is very different.

You find yourself feeling much more a part of the car in the Z.

Just my opinion.

I'd like to know for sure too since there are too many varying accounts, but according to my top quote, seems like the Z4 has slightly better performance.

I test drove a 335i convertible, a 135i convertible and a Z4 s35i before buying the Z4.

The cars' performance was within 90% of each other. In normal driving (not track) they're capable of the same, insane and illegal speeds.

The difference is how they feel around you.

To me, the 335i felt bigger (duh!) and more like a sedan.

The 135i was a blast to drive, but a little too "boy racer" for me.

The Z4 felt as confortable as the 335i, and almost as quick as the 135i but felt a little softer. Of the three it was the most fun to drive as a convertible. It is also the car I felt the most at home in and with the design I liked best. It's all personal.

Drive all three. Then look at the trunk space and the rear seats, and ask yourself if you'd ever need them. If you won't, get the Z4.
