Steering wheel controls gone crazy!

Hi all,

My car is a 2009 E89 3.5 DSG.

recently I've noticed my steering wheel controls (only the volume up/down) buttons are playing up.

They no longer work properly, rather "down volume" goes to call the last number, while "up volume" shows up my contacts - it's almost like they're reprogrammed to do that? Odd. To be clear, that's all they do.

The voice command and pickup/hangup buttons work fine as do the others on the other side of the steering wheel.

Does this sound like a software (reprogram?) issue or a hardware (wiring or some other) issue?

If it helps, it's not the M wheel, rather the early OEM 09 wheel with the chrome trims and thumb paddles.

I should also add I've done nothing to the car, it's completely standard and just happened recently - but seems stuck now.

Thanks for replies!

I'd have thought this likely a contact issue on the buttons but then I don't know why contacts would be brought up. The buttons are just that, nothing fancy, they presumably are wired directly into a module that controls all this sort of thing.

I'm pretty sure sometimes I get the last caller popup appear when I'm not expecting it!

I always thought I was pressing the phone button by mistake but maybe it's a software glitch hidden away.

That's my guess.

Good excuse for a steering wheel upgrade!

You might check the battery. BMW's are not happy when the battery gets low.

Thanks for replies. Curiously, it started playing up intermittently 6-12 months ago and only now is locked in the weirdness.

Would love the all black skinny M wheel but don't know if it will fit my 09. Plus they would be SO expensive in Aus!

PS. I suspect the car is on its original battery as I've not changed it since buying in 2011. Any way to check?

I'm having this similar problem as well. When I hit volume up it occasionally (mabe 1 in 20) calls my last dialed phone number. Initially I thought I pressed the wrong button but now I am 100% certain I didn't. I also have a stock 2009 35i.

I'm having the same issue on my 2009 s35i. Volume down calls the last number. I was starting to think I imagined hitting the wrong button till I read this thread.

I don't believe it has anything to do with the battery. I had mine replaced about 6 months ago.

Ok, fixed this. You have to open up the button module and clean the contact pads of the buttons on the PCB. Both + and - where a bit dirty, works great again.

My 2011 was on its OEM battery when I purchased it in July, 23. There was a date sticker on it saying that was the case. I did a battery test finding it failed but it still ran the car with some odd glitches.

I replaced the battery & the glitches disappeared.
