Mine stays shut on starting. Have programmed one of the option buttons to close display and routinely command it shut unless using nav. But does not pop open when i start car. Dat's da troot.

Mine too Rubber Ducky..... Works just the way I like. stays shut on starting. If I want it open I touch the iDrive knob and if I want it shut I push button 1 of my favorites.

maybe the iDrive is also 'intelligent' in that it learns from its user to stay shut (like it does with your driving style on DCT, not ?)

Hmmm... So I know the 2010 can stay shut on start up.. I suppose it's time to to try to talk to the dealer service dept again to see if maybe the 2010 has some different software that allows it to work like that.

My 1 year anniversary is coming up in the next couple months so I should be due for the first free oil change. (only 2500 mi) That should be a good time for an update as well.

I'll start calling around to see which dealers are more comfortable and knowledgeable about software upgrades and nuances.

I also tried it .... close the display before shutting down the car .... and yes ! it does NOT automatically open after restarting

It's a shame I need to backup out of my garage each morning, and so the PDC kicks in and so the display opens itself ...

Yours is also newer than 2009 which reinforces the current theory that they changed something after 2009.... unless someone with a 2009 also can start with it staying closed.

I think you can configure that PDC that it does not display the car picture (that's in any case possible on my wife's 1 Series) when configured like that it does not pop the screen open.

Need to look into that .... but will it 'beep' then ? Or is PDC completely inactive ?

mmmm, I'm an IT'er so probably thats where it went wrong ?

so instead of 'backup' out of my garage it should have read 'backing out' of my garage ? Am I correct ? I'm dutch speaking, so forgive me if I make mistakes ...

I think what msimon is saying is back into your garage so that when you leave every morning you just drive forward and your PDC won't turn on, hence avoiding the idrive to pop open.

Yep, the thingie keeps beeping even when display is closed, fortunately for my own car which is most of the time parked behind the 1 Series ;-)

Back up your garage is a perfectly normal occupation for an IT'er, everybody should know that we are normally most experienced at backing UP things.

Yes, IT'ers are very good at backing up..... It's the "restore" they seem to have trouble with...

I have a 2009 E89 and my iDrive opens every time I start no matter what I do. I have programmed one of the buttons to close it to make life a little easier.

Sounds like the later models have a software change. Hope it is available for all soon.

Only a mini-minor issue to me.
Great tip! I just did this on #1.

I also programmed buttons 2 through 5 to select between Music Collection/iPod/Sat Radio/FM.

#6 starts guidance back to my home.
