Ok, I am confused.

All i have just done is open the boot to put it in 'service mode'(?) then I had a look round to get my bearings and now the bloody boot will not unlock, so I can't close it!

The roof/boot are working fine BTW, no bongs or anything for a week!

Any tips on why my boot will now not unlock via the fob??

If you have a roof fault - i.e. a faulty microswitch the boot wont open - mine opened for weeks then all of a sudden - it wouldn't and there aint anything you can do about it. Robbie will tell you to remove something from under the fuse box and trip two connections - but you know as well as I do that's impossible.

This is the reason I ended up taking it to a BMW specialist - they have the scanners to trip the boot.

Also how do you intend to get the roof into 'Maintenance mode'.

The garage that failed to fix my roof said they could pop the boot lid but they could get to the switch it was too tucked away..

Me thinks you will be taking a pilgrimage to Warrington like I plan to next Monday..

Ok, confession time...I hadn't realised (or thought about) the fact you need to open the boot using the boot badge thingy so i was manically pressing buttons on the key fob, wondering why the boot mechanism wasn't opening up

It is nice and closed again now and the roof is currently working perfectly.

Anyone want to buy a really reliable E89?

Why didn't you ask me?

Well, to make it clear:

Hint #1:
The so called "Service Mode" isn't a special function! If you press the two flippers on both sides of the locking system in the opened trunk lid manually (or with a srewdriver), it logically locks, but the lid will stay physically open.
In this mode, you can move the roof in any position for diagnostics and repair (D&R), but you are always able to lift the lid in case of any malfunction.
That is your life insurance for working on the roof.

But, if you touch the BMW badge in that D&R situation, it will unlock the flippers und you won't get it locked anymore until the roof is back in good working condition.

Hint #2:
Don't touch the BMW Badge anymore!

If you are sure the roof is back in perfect condition, you may unlock the lid pulling the badge. But never ever too early!

Hint #3:
If finished, pull the BMW badge to get back to normal behaviour.




But hey guys, if you are not able to open that center screw of the fuse box to get it slided out, please don't even think about touching anything in the roof or of it's components!!!

I got access to the fuse box and it was 'out of the dash' but not far enough out and it felt like If I pulled harder than I was pulling, i was just going to damage a wiring harness or something. After this pic was taken i did disconnect those visible clips holding the wires, but I still couldn't budge it!

Ok, I see.
In general these wire bundles are very robust.
If possible you could try to push the one or other bundle aside, it won't tear when only bended.
Of course there is a limitation of the sliding rail.

Hopefully I am not going to need it out now.

I have left it all open in case I need to give it another go but ever since I changed the salmon relays my problems seem to have vanished.

I have the switches now though so I am good to go if the issues come back.

If I recall, your problem was boot closed microswitch. I would just go ahead and replace them now, instead of dealing with it when the top is stuck. Put it this way, replacing the microswitch is easier than getting to the fuse box.

My error code was "0692 microswitch, right rear end closed'.

I have a policy about not trying to fix things are currently working but at the first sign it starts playing up I think I now know what I need to do and I have everything I should need to do it

While your policy is generally good. In the case of convertible top problems, it's very unwise.

Ok, this is what i was afraid of...

I have changed the microswitch that was reporting a fault, and now the boot doesn't try to lower itself once the roof is stashed.

I have broken something that was working fine!

The roof will go up and everything works fine, but i cant put the roof down.

Anyone know what I may have done that could cause this?

I have now loosened off the three bolts and adjusted the whole thing a smidgeon, but it is the same result and I did mark the position of the bolts and it all appears to be lined up.

There is a switch in the trunk on the right, on the hight of a passengers shoulder. It detects the landing of the roof package in the trunk. Hardly ever fails, but who knows.

Then the two hall sensors on the right hydraulic ram are critical due to corrosion inside. If there are minor traces of rust on the front side, get it replaced with an E88 part.Details in the HowTo section of the UK Z-Forum.

Thanks for that Robbi.

Fortunately it is not either of those issues, it was far more simple. A piece of the trim wasn't in exactly the right position and was just stopping the roof going into its resting place in the boot!

All working now

Just to draw a line under my own personal roof saga. Drove 140 miles to The Zed Shed nr Warrington today. Long story short - Mike at The Zed Shed diagnosed and fixed it in 30 minutes!! Burnt out roof motor ! Which he had in stock. Roof all working fine !! Thanks for all your time and advice - Robbie, Jarvis etc. Hopefully you will never hear from me again.. lol
