Challenger tragedy happened today in 1986
I remember leaving high school for lunch, and turning on the TV to watch it. So sad.

My pops was a payload specialist and rarely watched the launches in MC but he did that day with Lorna Onazuka. He never watched another one after that.

was truly awful. i was in high school gym class, but rather than playing hoops the teacher wheeled in a TV for the class to watch the launch. we were all sitting on the bleachers complaining about having to watch it because the launches had become so routine...almost boring...and we wanted to play hoops instead.

I remember exactly where I was when it happened just like 9/11 and when OBL was killed. The race to space took on a life of its own, the competition with Russia turned into something ugly, caused a lot of corners to be cut and cost lives as a result.

As a school child, I was fascinated that a schoolteacher and 'ordinary' citizen, Christa McAuliffe, was on the crew. Was of course horrified with what happened right on live tv.
I have Challenger plates on my GT3 and GT4 because they look cool (spaceship) but also because I like to think that the astronauts would have driven these kinds of cars had they lived |
