Hmmm. More reliable than my old Miata? I would not put money on that proposition!

That has to be the strongest bullshit I've ever smelled. I've had no end of sodding problems with this car and I'm not alone. Most reliable. Every BMW I've owned has been less reliable than anything else. My Fiat Stilo and Renault Clio were more reliable.

Utter rubbish. Who commissioned the report, a front company for BMW lol

Interesting and nice to hear. Since I retired this summer, I've had more time to follow this forum. One can easily conclude from the various posts that the E89 is riddled with problems. In fact one can conclude that if you take this car out of the garage, you should ensure your spouse trails you with her Toyota to guarantee you can return home. No doubt it's human nature to focus on the negative aspects on any item we purchase as we all seek perfection.
From my persecutive the E89 is a beautiful and sleek sports car. In my view this car's styling is only topped by the 1960's Jag E Type. Mines a keeper.
I enjoy the forum as it's an excellent site to learn and share perspective on E89 issues.

The same can be said for every internet auto forum I've ever been on. You just have to take a lot of the hand-wringing with a grain of salt and use the site to keep up on what "might" go wrong with your ride (and avoid construing that to mean what "will" go wrong!).

This forum would barely exist without people complaining. Like Mike miller says, "no one writes to me unless they have a problem".
Unlike maniacgt, I've had no problems other than a couple of minor issues, like you can get in any car.

Great news for BMW. Nice press for sure.

One thing to note is that the methodology appears to only look at the condition at time of inspection and doesn't account for the path needed to get that car into top condition

Quote:
GTU carried out and did analysis of some 5 million general auto inspections and the Stuttgart-based inspection organization

GTU evaluates the technical condition of automobiles which are one to three years old and four to five years old.
For example, my car, which has been in the shop a decent amount, would contribute to the top rating, since I keep it in top shape (it is at the dealer so often, and maintenance is free) and garage it indoors and keep it very clean.

Another car which has never visited the shop but is overdue for oil change or brake pads would get a low rating, even though it has not had any unschedule maintenance and repair

Not trying to knock down the award, just pointing out that there is a methodology difference that can reconcile the award with forum members' experiences

What other sportscars did they compare the Z4 to...?

I guess it's alright, but I did get hit w/ a +$3k bill for those lousy fuel injectors.

I would totally agree- my car is over 4 years since new and has been absolutely perfect from day one ! I may end up regretting it, but I decided against getting the extended warranty because I have never had a problem.

Garage List
2012 z4 35is  [0.00]
I'm on year 3 of my lease and really have had no issue with my Z4. I had an X3 for a couple of years also problem free. My 335, however, was a complete disaster and after doing a dealer buyback on the first one I had the HPFP replaced 3 times on the second.

Regardless of that and my current problem free situation I would never own one of these cars outside warranty. The costs to fix them once they start declining is just too high. I'll continue to lease for now and probably eventually by a japanese car that will drive like crap but will not need service until I am in the grave

Thanks for the insight. My wife and I just came off a long line of very reliable Japanese cars (including two consecutive Miatas which this 35i replaces) and this 2 year old Z4 is an experiment of sorts to see how German iron compares these days. She's planning on keeping the car for several years like she did the Miatas (it's her DD), so we'll see how all that works out. Our fallback position is a 2016 or later Miata if things start to get hairy after the Z runs out of warranty.

Not based on the JD Powers survey I filled out last week.... But "typical BMW" levels....
