Problem with Nav Screen
Put the car in auxiliary mode (didn't actually start the engine) and the nav screen opened, but was totally blank and displaying an orange color the same as the dash lights. After a bit the orange color changed to black. The controller was active - could tell it was changing things, but nothing appeared on the screen. Turned the auxiliary power off and the screen retracted. Repeated the process several times with identical results.
Then tried actually starting the engine and got the same result. After doing the start / stop engine several times the normal "BMW" display appeared and everything worked OK afterwards. Any thoughts other than take it to the dealer? Getting ready to take a trip. Thanks for any help that's offered. Best regards, Ed |

never seen that issue. when you had the strange screen, did you hear any music or any other strong indicator that every thing was working other than the display?

hi Ed, the iDrive is just rebooting. on my E90 it must have happened 7 times in like four years. no biggie. but if you loose info for example your bluetooth pairs, your preferences and stuff like that, then consider taking it to the stealership.

OK, rebooting seems a little bit reassuring, but why the heck was it doing that?! Would be nice if it said something like "Hello, I'm rebooting. Be back with you shortly." With regard to the question about music playing the answer is "Yes". It resumed eaxctly where it had ended when the car was last driven and, as I indicated earlier, manipulating the idrive changed the music and such, but nothing was appearing on the screen other than the solid orange and then black.
A couple of hours after starting this thread I went back and tried everything again and it all worked exactly as it should. Oh well, if the feedback is correct, at least others will know what's happening if they get the dreaded orange screen! Thanks to those who responded. Very best regards, Ed Last edited by EandS; 05-23-2010 at 07:36 PM.. |

The orange screen means that there is an issue with the video output of the CIC or with the CIC itself turning on. You can test that by removing the CIC and turning the car on... the screen will be orange. The screen actually communicates with the CIC thru the CAN bus, so it knows when the CIC is rebooting or the video signal is gone somehow. |

Why not just take it back to the dealer ??? See if the computer logged some type of error. They say EVERYTHING is monitored. It would be interesting to see if this is or not. Since it is on the CAN bus it certainly could be.
