Is the 6 speed on the 35i different in any way?

To other manual N54 engine transmissions? I know the ratios are identical to a 135i. But what about the shifter?

I read somewhere that it had shorter shifts (short shifter as standard?). I asked my dealer to find out but he couldnt and told me to try 'googling' it.

Yes it has a shorter shifter. Prior to ordering mine, I test drove a 335i coupe manual and that had a longer throw than the Z4. Short shifter is standard.
