My z dissapoints me...for the first time :(

My lease is coming up in a month. Going back and forth with the idea of purchasing it.

Today I went to carmax to get an idea how much the car is worth. It's a loaded (all options other than park sensor and pass through) 35i with 11K miles. Carmax offered only 32K! which is 12K short of the residual!

Back to the drawing board...not sure what to do! Would love to keep the car for 2-3 more years but 12K more than market, c'mon... I would have expected z to keep the value a bit better.

You have options.

Ok so carmax's wants to rip you off. What else is new.

You say you like the Z4. Fine. Option one. Buy the car and don't base your value one car dealer. Check kbb.com and Edmunds.com for what they say it's worth. Check the online ads too. If the residual is to high. Try to get BMW to sell it for less. Don't think they will go 12k less as they know what a low mileage Z4 is worth. What would you pay for used Z4 just like yours if it was stolen or wrecked?

Or

Turn in and lease a new Z4. Rates are decent and you get a new warranty etc.

Leases are not designed to get equity.

Carmax estimate = lowball

Edmunds thinks an 09, 35i loaded, with 12K miles (clean condition, not outstanding as few really are ) - should fetch $37K in trade, or $41K at retail as best as I could figure.

Get another estimate or two. Carmax sounds low.

Carmax offered me $22,000 for a 128i with 11,000 miles on it and lots of goodies. The car looked and smelled knew. I ended up trading it to the dealer for my Z4. The dealer did much better. I paid 42,000 for my 2009 Z4 35i last October. I bought it as a CPO from a BMW dealer. It was loaded like yours and only 4,500 miles. Carmax lowballs! In October, this was a good price for a dealer vehicle as I has been really watching them.

BMW FS frequently stimulates sales through artificially high residuals, and that seems to be your case.

As others suggested, get used values from edmunds etc. I like checking out autotrader.com for local market used car values and supply.
