Cloudy windshield: I’ve had this issue since new. Anyone else?

The front windshield of my 2012 35is develops a milky film giving it a cloudy appearance every couple of days. I can wipe it down, but without fail a few days later, it has that milky film again. This has been going on since the car was new. I was just wondering if anyone else has this same issue with their front windshield. I think I remember a post from a few years ago, and someone said it was “new car” off-gassing. Well, my car is eight years old now. It’s in great shape, but no longer new...

They don't stop doing it just because they get old, especially in warm climates.

Any idea what causes it? None of my other BMWs have ever done this.

It generally has to do with the specific formulation of the vinyl or plastics used in the interior which vary somewhat from model to model. I can’t think of any vehicle I’ve owned that didn’t do it, though some are definitely worse than others (mid-seventies Fiats come to mind!).

I’ve recently noticed the same thing happening on my z4 too. It’s probably because of the weather being so hot over the past couple weeks.

Fix for cloudy interior windscreen:

Clean the outside of the windshield:

Clean the inside of the windshield:

I've followed this procedure myself and it is confirmed to work wonders on the Z4 windscreen / windshield (and other vehicles).

I do this annually at about the autumn equinox, as windscreen fog is much worse in winter after all of the summer off-gassing of the car's vinyl and plastics.
