AutoMotor und Sport is reporting that new next Z4/Toyota project WILL have a turbo six gasoline engine.

BMW spokesman Kai Lichte said:

Whether the hybrid powertrain is also used in the BMW, or whether the Z4 gets four-wheel drive, but it was "too early to talk about it," as the BMW spokesman told an Australian newspaper says. "First, we will have a six-cylinder, that's for sure. Everything else comes later maybe."

The next Z4 will be jointly developed with Toyota and BMW. One possibility is a Toyota hybrid and fuel cell expertise also to be used in the next Supra model. Toyota all-wheel drive Toyota Supra might be available as a hybrid drive system with a two-liter four-cylinder and 350 hp on tap for the next Z4.

No hybrid and rwd would be nice. Otherwise, not interested in an awd hybrid. Make a coupe version so BMW track enthusiasts have something to look forward to.

6 cylinders, RWD, no hybrid and soft top to shed 200 kg's of weight off the E89, that would be great. Oh wait... the E85 had all that ;-)

I never would have guessed it'd have a turbo I6....
Wait every single model in the lineup has that option.
Atleast they're original.

I'll take a E86 Z4M over this any day

I'm a bit confused why you would say this, seeing as you own a 1M. I adore the Z4M myself, having owned one for several years before buying a 135i with the N54. I was COBB Stage 2+ with that car, and it was an absolute rocket. I sold it, bought another Z4M which I drive now, but I miss that N54 dearly. The Z4M is still my favorite car ever, but the engine is seriously a dog now. Why would you not prefer the I6 turbo just out of curiosity?

It's not that I don't love cheap speed but throwing a N55 in everything it's makes it lose it's appeal, plus the N54 so far is far more tuneable.
The S54 and E85/6 Z4M has a special place in my heart just because what it was. I love my 1M don't get me wrong but I hate seeing all cars use the same N55, If that makes sense. It just isn't as enthusiast friendly as the N54.

So how does that M6 fit in all this enthusiast talk?

The Z4 will be replaced with the Z5, and the venture with Toyota will be the new Z7! The Z7 will be a hybrid with the new S55 M3/4 motor.

No wonder we are all confused.

There will be a Z1, and some point a 2 series derived Z3 and so on.

It's heavy, but fun to drive. A bespoke V10 is always nice and is a reminder that BMW used to rock their segment, IMO

Yeah the 918 spyder, P1, La Ferrari and i8 all suck ass lmao. That's the future and it's amazing. The real issue at hand is google and their autonomous cars. That would be pretty lame.

Really? If it rains, just put the top up or drive faster :-) And rather a drop of rain than oil stains from leaky hydraulics of E89's ;-) The E89 did a good job getting SLK drivers to the BMW side. Oh another important note, I keep my golf bag including the driver in the trunk. The E89 was shaped to fit 2 shopping bags and the purse ;-) I'm looking at E89 sdrive35i, but I do find the weight penalty and practicality issues a draw back as I use the Zed for roadtrips and as a toy for track driving.

Ummm... I can fit two golf bags (driver included in bag) and a Clicgear push cart in my E89 bro. You'd be surprised how much crap you can fit in the E89.

Oil stains from leaky hydraulics? Never heard of that for the E89.

I skipped the E85 for 1 reason... but I guess beauty is in the eye of the cupholder.

If you're looking at a 35i, you're gonna find much more practicality than an E85. Weight penalty? Nothing a simple tune on that twin turbo 3.0 won't cure if you're more into roadtrips. For track it tends to overheat tho.

2 bags and still top down? Almost every km in the Z4, the top is down :-) Seeing you're from HK it makes sense to drive top closed and AC on in daytime though. I actually put 2 bags on top of each other in the trunk of the E85 and still had room for carts if I'd use them. Btw, I'm not into pure straight line speed when I'm referring to the weight problem. You do notice the extra weight in corners. Brakes are no real issue as I'd go for some Alcon brakes anyway :-) Doesn't Active autowerke have a better intercooler? I also read about some one offering ball bearing turbo modifications which even lowered load temps by 20 degs centrigrade. And come to looks, I like both. Actually the hydraulic line leak of the E89 is quite well documented, even in buyers guides. I actually looked into Boxsters as they accomodate the golf bags and still allow the top to be down, unfortunately they also include the high number of random engine self destructions, especially when driven hard.

No, can't go top down with the bags and cart, maybe just the cart lol. I drive the SUV's to golf and my two Zed's are for mostly night time top down driving and winter top down every day driving. Anything under 32C degrees and not pouring, I'm top down. As you can see, I'm also a top down kind of guy.

Cornering does feel heavier when compared to the E36 ZM but as long as the car stays flat and has the power, I'm happy doing spirited driving with the E89. 6 pot Brembos stops the E89 well. Haven't looked too far into cooling options as I don't track my cars here.

I never understood the appeal of a soft top… my 986 was a soft top and it was loud as hell in there. I've been in E85 Z4s and same thing

both my E89 Z4s, E93 335, E93 M3, and SL550, being hardtops… are perfect. It's a coupe when you want it and can easily be turned into a convertible.

Soft top verts can't be coupes.. one main reason I dislike the new M6 vert. I considered one when the concepts were showing hardtops….

It has occurred to me that this concept looks a lot like the Zagato coupes I saw at the BMW Museum this past February... look at the way the hood extens downward into the headlight area. Together with the added body curves... it makes for a very sexy package.
