Opportunity to purchase E89
I'm thinking of trading in my 4 door BMW for a Z4 and have an opportunity to purchase one that seems to be a pretty fair deal but wanted everyone's insights as I don't know much about the E89 model. So here it goes:
2013 BMW Z4 sDrive28i with 38k miles EXTERIOR - Black Star Spoke (style 290) 17" x 8.0" light alloy wheels w/P225/45R17 run-flat performance tires Retractable hardtop Xenon adaptive headlights Adaptive Brake Lights Dual power outside mirrors Heated outside mirrors White side-turn indicator lenses Heated glass rear window Rain-sensing windshield wipers and auto headlight control ENTERTAINMENT Anti-theft AM/FM/CD Hi-fi audio system with Radio Data System and MP3 capabilities Auxiliary audio input adaptor for portable music players HD Radio Satellite radio preparation iPod & USB adapter INTERIOR Brown 6-way manually adjustable bucket seats Pwr front seats -inc: driver seat memory Leatherette upholstery Center armrest Floormats 3-spoke leather-wrapped adjustable multi-function sport steering wheel with audio and hands-free phone controls (if so equipped) LCD main and trip odometers Service Interval Indicator with miles-to-service readout 4-function on-board computer Outside temperature display Asking price $24,147 Thoughts? Things to be looking for? |

You should be able to get a 3.5 for that price. If you are not in a hurry I would keep looking.

what would be a "steal" price? Fall/Winter season is here so they may be eager to sell. It's been there for 30+ days. |

A lot of people love their 28i models but I wouldn't settle for anything less than the 35i. Especially if I only did it because it was a good deal!

Aside from stock power levels, mod-ability of the 35i/is is unparalleled in the E89 platform. If I were you, I would only focus on 35i/is and exclude anything else from my search. Good luck! |

Living in the greater Bay Area as both of us do, you should know that owning a car like a 35i or is is kind of pointless because there's really no where to use all that power. Oh wait, aren't you the guy who's wrecked two or three E89s in and around SF?

I went from a 135i with M package to a Z4 28i.
- The 0-60 time went from 5 or 5.1 seconds to 5.6 or 5.7 - 50-80 acceleration in the 135i was basically effortless; 28i downshifts 1-3 gears (from 8th) to perform similarly (though a bit slower) - Shifts in both are great, very little difference, esp. in sport mode - 135i DCT would occasionally hunt/delay gear selection during slow turns or rolling stops (sometimes quite annoying and a bit scary when shooting a gap); no such issues with Z4 28i 8-speed, I prefer it overall - Steering feel in 135i better (heavier) - Handling in 28i better overall (more planted, less bounce, more composed over mid-turn bumps, etc.) - 135i got 25-27 mpg; 28i gets 32-34

I already gave you one-$20k. Look, this isn't rocket science (or an exact science for that matter). Price the car out in KBB for your area and shoot for something at the low end. If they're asking $24,147 (geesh-how did they come up with that number? Just something they pulled out of thin air no doubt) I'll bet $20k would be "a steal". But I can't know that for sure without doing the research you should have already done.

Let's get you some real data versus relative speculation on what arbitrary drop you should get from an arbitrary value.
Manheim Auction house wholesale average price for the 2013 z4 28i, over the past six months, has been $21,200 @ 40k miles. Obviously YMMV on options. But that said the $24k asking price retail is pretty reasonable, given the above wholesale average. With the Z4 I'd ask - is it a color combo you desire? Options you desire? Maintenance history and current condition? If you tick all those off, I'd say you are in the zip code to make a purchase. Anything under $24k is a decent deal. Good luck! Filippo

My 2013 28i CPO with 16k miles might be able to fetch $24k on the low end. I wouldn't pay $24k for 38k miles. $18k-$20k is where I would price it.

Use this to compare and as a bargaining tool.
http://cpo.bmwusa.com/#searchIventory I just bought a 2016 CPO and this helped me show the dealer what other cars with the same specs were selling for. Ended up saving me a lot of money, in the end, I got the car for $7k less than their original asking price, mainly because another dealer had the same car in a different color with fewer miles for a much lower price. Don't be afraid to walk out on the deal. They have to sell that car, you don't have to by "that" car. They will always call you back on a number they can work with. That's what happened with mine, they called me 2 weeks later and offered a lower price. |
