Hi from France ! I'm new to BMW. I am the lucky owner of a z4 sDrive 35i for a week. It's a Stage II AC Schnitzer (375HP & 515Nm).
I'm particularly interested in performance parts and advices about mods.

Thanks for this great source of information and inspiration !

I know the purpose of this thread is for new Z owners to introduce themselves, but I can't open a thread and couldn't find another thread to ask my questions so I'll ask them here. Hopefully it's not too much of a bother.

Next spring I'm looking to buy a Z4. It'll be my first "real" car. I've been saving up the cash for a long time and now that I have the money I'm starting to think it might not be the wisest idea.

1) Next year I'm moving to Edmonton from Vancouver. Can the Z4 handle snow with snow tires? With lots of snow it'll obviously turn into a plow, but my main concern is packed hard snow in -xx weather. Those from the colder climates know what I'm talking about.

2) What should I look for in the used market km/miles wise? I've seen a few 11/12 models with less than 50k km on the odo. My budget can't handle anything over a 2012 so anything I buy will be out of warranty.

3) Any fellow Canadians here? Any other advice is genuinely appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

This car should not be your winter time daily driver. If this is the only car you can afford get a proper practical car.

If this car is the only car you can afford, and it will be used with no warranty, big mistake.

You don't need this car that bad.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah it's starting to look like I have to erase the Z4 from my brain. At least until 2021 when I move back to Vancouver.

Technically I can buy a winter beater no problem. The logistical issues make it impossible (finding parking for a second car etc.).

Now I have to decide between 2014 2s and new Mustangs. With the right incentives you can get a new Mustang for a really reasonable price.

Not sure how a Mustang gives a better snow driving experience than a Z4? Frankly my experience is that a BMW with good all-season tires will handle snow reasonably well with a light throttle foot. DSC and ABS help. Or even how a 2 series is that much better? Best of luck with whichever decision you make!

Well, Z4s are super low the ground. I've never driven a car that low. The rear wheel drive aspect of it is somewhat worrying (mainly because I've never owned a RWD car), but I know a lot of guys that drive RWD cars in Northern Alberta with snow tires. When I talk to them about it they just mention snow tires (obviously) and using your head. With the Z4 I would have to battle 2 issues: clearance and traction. With the other two cars I would probably only have to worry about traction.

The 2 series has Xdrive. A lot of the ones I've seen in the used market are AWD. So there's that option. Plus, neither the Mustang nor the 2 series are super low to the ground. If I do buy a Mustang it won't be the V8. An eco boost is plenty power for me. Not sure if that makes winter driving any easier .

This whole discussion makes me want to add the X1 to the list of candidates. I've only looked at them briefly but they look sooooo boring lol.

Snow

I am from one of the snowiest areas of the USA. My main concern would be the overall destruction of electronics and the entire undercarriage as caused by road salt. This slushy mess would be brought into the interior on your boots as well.
I have used sports cars in snow however and it can be done but it was very hard on the car. Traction with good tires is OK. However FWD is almost as good as 4WD. Get an old Civic or Corolla.

South Carolina?

Road Salt can't get to any electronics and the undercarriage isn't any different than any other car right?

Hello, just purchased a 2010 sdrive35i and I go to pick it up tomorrow. I joined these forums to ask a question regarding the iDrive system but it appears I can't post in the general forums yet. Hopefully this post will give me access! =)

AJ from Los Angeles here.

Picked up a 2013 2.8i, black on tan interior from a Mercedes dealer for 27k (worth the price), tinted windows, and after driving it for a day I immediately went and sold my yamaha r3 motorcycle that I had bought about 3 weeks ago, because why the hell would I wear all that impractical gear when I now have something that performs just as well but gives me music, coffee, comfort, etc. This is the first nice car I have ever had, and I started a year ago looking at a z3, then the early z4, and ended up desiring a hardtop with a comfortable ride. It's still a bit jittery but not too bad, the sound system is horrible and I'm researching upgrades, but everything else is amazing, glad I went with the turbo, had it checked out at a local indie, 58k miles, they said it was very well cared for. This thing turns heads everywhere I go and hugged the road when I took it up into Angeles Crest Highway. This car makes you want to go on drives. Now I just need to find a place without traffic!

You paid $27k after taxes, registration fees, etc etc for 58k mile car, yes?

Hm..... Maybe I can get $30k for my 18.5k mile car???!!!!

Get a set of Nokian r3's you'll be okay unless the snow is really high you'll turn into a plow. You'll feel bad for the car driving it in the winter though.

Noo-est noob here. I just got my Z4 a couple of weeks ago. Just getting started on mods. H&R springs have arrived. Wheels and tires soon. A few other cosmetic mods here and there are planned. Some Carly programming. Stereo upgrades. Maybe exhaust. Then drive and enjoy.

I’ve been digging around on here and finding most everything I’ve needed. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.
