Z4 with xDrive?

Any thoughts on whether BMW might ever consider manufacturing an all-wheel drive variant of the Z4? Any interest, provided they could keep the power to weight ratio dialed in?

Yeah. That is kind of what got me wondering about an xdrive variant. That and reading a bunch of posts on this blog expressing sadness at having to put their Z4s away for the winter.

I don't think anyone has to put the Z4 away for the winter. Just need to put snow tires on for the winter. Even an AWD TT or TTS with summer performance tires wont go anywhere in the snow. You'd have to get snows for the Audi as well (perhaps they come with all seasons, and you might be able to make due with those if you're careful and it doesn;t snow too much). I think a lot of people put them away for the winter because they don't want to exposie the car to snow and salt.

Lets hope BMW doesn't feel compelled to match Nissan's silly idea with the new "Cross Carbrio X6"

xDrive would be overkill and not necessary. The Z4 is a more-than-capable car in winter as it is...

Ah. This is nice to read. Thanks for the thoughts. I was wondering if DSC and a good set of snow tires would suffice in locations with more inclement weather conditions.

Any problems with the rear breaking loose in rainy conditions unpredictably?

With good snow tires (Blizzaks) the Z4 is perfectly drivable in the snow.

And no, no issues with the rear breaking loose in the rain.

AWD would just add weight and ruin the handling.

I 2nd cdeslandes' comments. This is my 1st rear-wheeled car driving in snowy Toronto during wintertime and I felt confident behind the wheel. Just don't go crazy on the fast pedal and you should be fine.

If you look at one of Top gear episodes, they were comparing a Z4 to an Audi TT AWD.
On the wet terrain, the Audi was quick in acceleration by a significant margin. On the dry terrain, Z4 beat that... The AWD is not only for Snow. It could be for wet weathers, or for countries were rainy days are more than sunny ones.
Moreover, on a high speed, cornering in an AWD is better or achieve a more consistent steering control than a RWD. (i am comparing AWD/RWD on similar performance cars)...
Now, having said that, there are not enough customers who are buying the Z4 RWD, it would make no sense, from a business/market view of point, to add an AWD and make that BMW roadster market even smaller (divided between RWD and AWD)...
my 2 cents...
