Replacement of BMW Emblem (bonnet/hood)

The BMW emblem on my Zed has a big stonechip. I now have a brand new emblem but I couldn't remove the old one.

What is the safest way to take it out without scratching the bodywork? I have tried flat blade screwdriver, but it didn't work. Please help.

the roundel is held in place by 2 plastic pegs that insert into the hood. Buy a set of non-marring pry bars (these are made of plastic but are stiff enough to pry the roundel up). place a cloth between the pry bar and the hood and wedge the roundel up

You could also use an old gift card or an expired credit card. Something thin yet sturdy should do the trick. You slide it under the roundel and lift up. Obviously be careful not to scratch the paint. The reason I say old or expired card is I have damaged a few cards doing this. Good luck!

Why not just drop by your friendly BMW dealership, I am sure your SA will gladly pop in the new one for you.

I have also tried credit card, but it was still too thick. There is really no gap beteen the emblem and the bumper. I have just ordered a set of pry bars from amazon.

Nothing is free at my local dealer. They may charge me 10-minute labour for the job.

Pry bar and floss won't work (I had tried). I have been told the emblem is secured by two nuts. The only way of removing the emblem is to undo the nuts.

This is completely incorrect. Can you see any nuts on the underside of the hood? It is a press-fit and in my situation, very tight. But the pry bars were quite successful at loosening it up.

This is what I found:

Two nuts hold this on. Part Number 51418176418. They are self-threading nuts.

Today I tried both pry bars and floss, I couldn't even get the emblem out 2mm. It was so tight to the bumper. The two pins on left/right are 2cm long. The one on top is 1cm long.

Super helpful there rolf.

Shadowfax, your emblem is TOTALLY different from mine, no wonder you're having difficulty. Unfortunately, i have nothing to add to solve your issue.

I like to help whenever I can Dave, sometimes a smile is all that is needed.

Quite right they are different, this is why I suggested earlier to let your friendly SA look after that. Why chance to damage your hood?

The new emblem is on the bumper. I just removed the air vent above the radiator and unscrewed the 2 nuts. I don't understand why E89 in NA are different from cars in Europe, although they were all built in the same factory.

My apologies Shadowfax but I still don't see any threads or nuts on the photo of the roundel. Just 3 smooth pins. Where are the nuts or what do they thread onto?

Seems it is held on with 2 stamped sheet metal nuts [similar to Tinnerman nuts] that cut just deep enough on the longer unthreaded posts. I think the new part number for the nuts is: 51 41 8 176 418 @ Euro .14 Each

check part # 19 at:
http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E8..._bumper_front/
.Seems US models are glued on, while Euro models are "Theft Proofed".

Out of curiosity I removed the air intake cover and tried to take a picture of the back of the roundel with my iPhone. Not a very good picture, but I can clearly see two self-threading nuts on the big plastic tabs, so this is also true for the US, at least for 2011 models.

Edit: looks like I couldn't figure out how to attach the picture

One more try:
