Nielsen ratings

Hi everyone.. My Partner of 15 years has the worst taste in cable TV.. He watches the kardashians (spelling?), that b*tch who has 50 kids, that skantch from NJ who thinks she can speak to the dead, etc.. I'm certain that TLC is ironically the host of most of these non-educational shows.. Anyway.. When I finally get control of the TV at 10 PM I switch to Netflix and watch my truly educational shows [ enter any show on Netflix here]. My question is this.. When I switch onto netflix from cable are his seriously f-cked up shows getting ratings from me or should I turn it to the weather channel before finally switching to Netflix? Thanks!

I don't know how the Nielsen ratings work, but wondering what B*tch you're referring to? The religious Duggar family? Because I don't agree with them, but why you calling her a B*tch? She actually seems pretty nice.

I have no idea how they're calculated either, but I imagine the 2 being on a completely different system, with cable having a bit of a timer associated with a channel (e.g. your S/O watched channel 201 between 8PM and 8:30), and Netflix uses a view count similar to YouTube.

Lol poor OP asked a question and is getting smacked hard.

I'm not 100% but i think the answer is yes. You should probably switch to weather or sports before turning on Netflix.

You know in Japan they called Jersey Shore the Macaroni Rascals?

Always got a kick out of that.

As for OP's question, I have no idea how the ratings are calculated, something I never thought about before. Just block TLC, E!, Bravo etc with a child lock.

I'm sure your partner (random question, is it considered rude or something to just say bf or husband or whatever? saying "partner" always seemed super PC to me) would love that.

I'm guessing it's homosexual relationship.

But yea, either block the channels or switch to other channels before turning to Netflix

I work in advertising and deal with Nielsen pretty often. OP, do you have a Nielsen set top box? It is a small box that gets plugged into your cable box. If not, your TV viewership has no impact on Nielsen ratings. I believe there is about 20K boxes out in the wild which roughly translates to 50K people they monitor.

To answer your original question, even if you have a Nielsen box, don't change the channel to make the ratings more normal . watch whatever you watch whenever you want. The Nielsen numbers are used in advertising to determine how valuable a spot of advertising during a show is. IE if 20 mill people watch a show, that spot has more value than a spot during a show only watched by 20k people.

TLC needs to change their name from "The Learning Channel" to "The Little Large Channel".

I work in the industry, it's a fairly rigorous process, nothing is perfect but it's not half-arsed that's for sure. Sampling is taken very seriously.

Purfect idea with the child lock..No it's not considered rude to say Bf or husband and I agree "partner" sounds way too PC. From now on I'm sticking to good old " Fxck buddy."

That's what I got from it, I still see nothing wrong with using husband, wife, bf, gf. No reason to treat it differently than a heterosexual relationship in what you call your SO.

Then out of even more curiosity, how is radio broadcast or even air TV measured, i.e. what determines whether the station you're listening to will still remain a station for kick-ass hard rock or becomes a staticy, Spanish radio station?

I am not fully up to speed on off the air tv viewing. As far as I know, in US, you need a digital converter to watch over the air tv which in turn would get plugged into your Nielsen Box.

For radio they keep track 2 ways, it is either using journals and diaries (old school) or using PPM (portable people meter) which acts like a bastrad child of shazam and a pager. It listens wherever you go and picks up little tags played on radio and reports them back to Nielsen.

Wonder if they keep track of how many people change the channel when the commercials come on. I F***ing hate commercials.
