Why can't software companies leave things alone?

Microsoft loves screwing up good things like MS Office. I've gotten used to that. But I was pretty happy with the way Flickr looked and worked and now it looks like crap. WTF?

I hate Office 2013, especially Outlook.

If they never screwed up previous versions they would never be to the version you liked.

You do? What do you not like about it? Works great, could not imagine going back to 2010.

I don't like the look (theme), I don't like the reading pane, and I hate the reply setup. It's just not as smooth as 2010 was. Hard to describe, but after using it for 2 years, I still wish I had 2010.

I understand MS wanted to make Outlook and the web version look as identical as possible, but I think both lost something in doing so.

My real gripe here is how ugly Flickr is now. And grabbing the BB Code to an image now involves way too many mouse clicks.

That said, I'm not paying for it and AdBlock Plus nicely blocks all the stupid ads, so I guess I shouldn't be complaining.

Software, like pretty much any other engineered product, changes in the interests of innovation, staying ahead of the competition and profit.

That said : I hear your frustrations ... if you get habitualized to something you like, it is often difficult to accept the new version that does not fit with your learned experience with an older version.

Main reason is adaptation of Mobile devices. These companies are trying to merge the UI with Desktop and Mobile look and feel. Too bad they fail most times.

one thing about software you have to install on your computer, you always (well all most always) have an option not to upgrade. I would play with the new software to see if i like it and make sure they did not break something, and keep the old version around or keep it installed if all possible. If I did not like the new one I would revert back.

However, with things going to web base app like gmail, you have not choose you have to upgrade whether you want to or know. Talk about coming in one morning and finding that you main stream main app works differently, just look at gmail. My company decide to dump Outlook and go to gmail for corp mail. As much as I hate Microsoft, Google is far works. At least MS make an good attempt to making sure their product works, Google relays on most everyone to tell them what they did wrong. Also they have no issue with making UI changes on the fly and then you have to figure out where the moved a feature.

As things move to more web based applications it is going to get far worse of no leaving things alone.

because people dislike change and are hyper sensitive.

they try to make something better to attract new customers but the current customer already learned the last version or the last version was what they were sold on. now they have to learn something they already learned once and they are more than ready to post their "review" online. when i say review, i mean they're ready to burn them to the ground and tell the world how much the suck now.
