Wins? At what? Some will disagree but here are my 2 cents:

The S2000 is a very nice true sports car. It likes to be revved and it handles like a dream. Overall it is a nice ride. The current Z4 has definitely gone upscale and is more of a sports touring car. It is too heavy and l luxurious to be a "sports car".

Sure, there are other "sports cars" out there that cost and weigh a lot more than a Z4; Ferraris, Lambos, etc. I still think a sports car, i.e. roadster, is something along the lines of the original British roadsters. The Z3 kinda fit this bill but the current Z4 has really matured into a different type of car.

I recently sold my S2K and bought a Z4. They are totally different cars. The S2K is close to a perfect sports car that fits on you like a pair of broken in blue jeans. Suspension, engine, cockpit, and shifter work well together, and I consider the shifter the best I have ever driven in any vehicle. It's just a pure sports car experience.

Switching to the Z4, you immediately notice that it has none of the edge and directness of the S2K. But it's significantly more comfortable and refined. Night and day difference there. Ultimately, I feel the Z4 handles as well as the S2K, with much less understeer than late model S2Ks, but you just don't get the direct feedback the S2K has, so it's not as apparent.

As for the engine, well they are both great. The S2K four is a gem, and a pure joy to wind out. BMW's sixes are awesome in their own way. Comparing manual transmissions, you'd think the Z4's came from a farm truck compared to the S2K. It's not that the BMW gearbox is bad, it's just that it's nowhere near the perfection of the S2K. I find that the Z4 shifter is lacking in directness and feel.

That's about all I can think of right now. They are definitely two different types of vehicles.

I drove one of the first S2k's in Belgium (October 1999) and I can say that the shifter is one that I never experienced in my life, and never have since that period....

I owned an S2000 from 2002 - 2005

The S2000 wins if you want to feel like you've just gotten off an amusement park ride every time you get out of your car.
