It just beeps, but beeps change depending on how close you are to the obstacle. Do you have the nav screen? If yes, it should display a "radar-like" graphic on your screen helping you determine how far and where the obstacle is ...
Not sure park distance is (or was) available without nav. |

Same for mine with Nav screen as described above. On the NAV screen the Nav screen outlines in colors, going from yellow to red and shows how close you are to any given object again on both F and R bumper locations. The beeps get louder the closer you get to an object. I have 4 sensors imbedded in both the F and R bumpers.
