rusty brake rotor?
Just wondering what can be done for rusty brakes in terms of routine cleaning, besides taking out the whole wheel to access them?

Just drive the car, the rust will come off the first time you hit the brakes.

Cast iron. You get a film of rust when they get wet while hot, the pads brush that off as soon as you drive.
The only inconvenience is that you may get rust stains on your wheels, but that's easily cleaned.

The rotors contain iron. The rust (red) is a product of iron oxidation and completely harmless. For some reason, BMWs rotors tend to oxidize more than other manufactures.
The best defense against brake rotor oxidation is to scrape it off daily with some good hard braking (actually light braking works, too).
