Question Unknown adapter plugged into OBD

The adapter shown in the pics has been plugged in the OBD port since purchasing my Z. Any idea what it is ? I have not removed it yet, since I have nothing to plug in the OBD port (second pic is the cover that goes over it, although it is not necessary). It says Thin WiFi Switch Ver2.0 on it, but a Google search yields no match. And if you are curious: no, it does not create a WiFi hotspot (atleast not a public one -- as opposed to a hidden network).

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Did you scan the barcode shown on the white label on blue case?

I scanned the barcode and it is the same number "6ceceb239cf5"
It might be a dash cam info receiver. My dash cam has a receiver like this and it gets speed, psi and other useful info via obd ii and attaches on video.

talhagursoy, can you think of anyway I could confirm that it is indeed a dash cam info receiver ? Your guess so far, it appears, seems to be the most plausible.

I am not sure how you can confirm it, but another possibility; it may be a Bluetooth scanner for IOS or Android phones.
Found really similar item. Here is the link;

Try to search it via Bluetooth when car is on, maybe your phone will discover it as a device.

Ahh... Good point! I ran a WiFi search and came empty; however, I haven't performed a Bluetooth search yet! I will do a search in the morning, and report the results.

I just find it very strange that there are no logos/monikers on chip/board or the casing. I wonder if it's deliberate or merely lack of attention/care to marketing.

A lot of OBD II adapters are very inexpensive commodity items that they just don't bother branding anymore or you find several differently branded ones that are clearly the same item.

Another possibility for what that is though is an insurance company dongle. That would explain having WiFi capabilities which don't really make sense for a regular scanner; it needs to be able to report the recorded driving habits. That barcode would make it easy for the company to scan the device to assign it to your account.

Sorry, forgot to update the thread. I ran a Bluetooth search yesterday and came empty.

Re Tangent: That makes sense. If it's an insurance dongle, then it is possible that they didn't invest in branding the piece. Thanks for the explanation.

Since I can not conclusively determine what the adapter is (although the best 2 guesses are aforementioned), I will unplug it in the morning for good.

Thanks for offering explanations.
