Replacing the speedometer -

Hi All,

I've got a Left Hand drive z4 23i. I'm now living back in the UK and one of the criteria for getting the car registered here (apart from the hideous plates!) is that the speedo shows miles per hour. Mine (German spec) shows Km/h

For the privilege of changing this over, my local stealership would like me to hand over £1,000+ Thanks guys...

I've noted on ebay that you can get the cluster at a reasonable price. See here

So my question to those mechanically minded out there. Can this be done? It seems that the 'mileage' for the car is associated with the cluster. Note the ebay entry above states 'unknown mileage'. Do you think I can get this cluster and then get a local friendly garage to install and still be legal? Anyone done anything like this before?

Imagine, if only there had been a combo mp/h km/h speedo in the first instance - not so cool, but I can do a lot of cool things with £1K

BTY, the other thing you have to do is alter the throw of the main beam. As stated in the manual, this can be done with a flipped switch on the Xenons; it works, but it is very wierd after years of them pointing the other way!

Thanks for any help

On the e38's - a swapped console would throw a tamper dot light up and would require someone with coding software to remove and make things work. I bet its the same issue here, as every cluster is coded to the car.

Thanks Lurcher. That sounds about right, the dealership want £200+ to 'code' it. I guess they would be officially allowed to...

Would other non-official garages be ratified to do this and then remove the 'tamper' light to follow? Or, has anyone got any experience of bringing a 2nd hand item to the dealership and they will accept charging for labour etc. only? £89 compared to near a grand is a big jump for me.

Another thought. In essence, all I actually really want is to change the bloody facia, I can leave all the cluster itself in place if possible. (DVLA rules out any stick-ons).

Anyone know if this kind of thing is possible?

+1

I'm in Canada and thus have a speedo in km/h ONLY. It's an irritation every time I have to drive into the States (mph). Never understood this decision by BMW.

One quick thought. I am not 100% sure but it should be available in the hidden menu of the computer the digital speedometer in mph... it should be enough to get the car registered in the UK I think.

This is one of the functions tht has to be coded to show on the dash board. It will show in place of the fuel economy area. I have seen it done on some other cars but have yet to code it my self. I jsut got the software a couple days ago and will be trying to code it soon. If it works I will let you guys know.
