Spartanburg VS Regensburg

Hi guys i know many of us in this forum are previous e85 z4 owners. Since the e89 is now built in Germany instead of SC USA have you found a difference in built quality, for myself i think the fit and finish of the e85 was well done more austere and the whole car was a bit thighter. what do you guys think?

I'm afraid I have to agree that my e85 was a bit better built than my e89 but only marginally. There's an awful lot more stuff in the e89 so it's not surprising more can go wrong.

From a quality point of view I did find the e89 a bit better. I did drive both for a spell shortly after I had the e85 soft-top I upgraded to the e89 with retractable top.

However, having said that I am comparing a e85 Z4 30i (2008) to a higher end model the e89 Z4 35i (2009). The e85 was new when I got it late in 2009 (after my Germany Trip).

Problems with the e85 plastic covers kept falling off. The rear view mirror housing and the plastic vertical cover plate right in front of the ashtray.

The e89 I got slightly used with 7,000 KM on the odometer. Like most I had HPFP issues the pump was changed and then the rear wheel cracks.

My upgrade to a different car after the e89 was driven by several reasons; needed more room, missed my former M3, the e89 wheel issue and my dream to do a cross country trip to California in a convertible was completed. Not necessarily in that order.

Both the Zed's I drove are wonderful automobiles I cannot say that quality was ever an issue.

I find most auto hardtops rattle a bit more than true softtops.

My 2002 Z3 didn't have one rattle or squeak in it in the 7 years I owned it. Looks llike I will pick up my new Z4 this next week. I hope it is as quiet and well built as my Z3 was. My twin brother has my Z3 and it's still as quiet as when I had it. It was one of the best cars I ever owned.

That is the one benefit of making the chassis out of play-doh - no squeaks!

My 2009 35i appears to be much better built than my previous 2003 E85. Fewer rattles, less wind noise, better fit and finish inside and out.

I have an e85 and an e89, both ordered new.

I see no quality differences whatsoever.
