OBD scanner?need suggestions...

Hi! I need suggestion from You as I am a z4 owner and also a bmw fanatic.
I have also old bmws (from e3 to e24 6 series)and don't need much electronic equipment to fix them....
but now I have a e89 z4 , I fell in love at first sight,and I'd like to know :
1 have you got an obd scanner, in order to read and reset fault codes?
2 which brand Do you suggest?
3 with newer cars ,are there particular features I have to look at for those scanners?
4 do you think I really need it?(In Italy they asked me 65 euros for diagnosis and reset a fault code, on my last e85 z4...they discovered that they unplugged a sensor after last service....but I had to pay for the diagnosis, as they did it...)
